No you don't purchase Wi-Fi internet, although i think you can in some countries. Since you have ADSL, all you need to do is purchase Wireless router, and plug a Ethernet cable from your ADSL into your router. When multiple Ethernet cables are plugged into the router, i.e. multiple nodes connected, speed wise is still the same, it's not divided up, one PC, might be using up all the bandwidth, and the other might be using just a bit.
cool
u help me a lot!:)

but i still don't get the bit u said about the wireless connection
sorry...so do i need to buy a wireless router and carry it with me everywhere i go?ethernet cable is connected between the router and the laptop?

No no... you plug your wireless router to your ADSL modem and just leave it there, and then what happens is you need Wireless network cards for your Laptop (which you said you have), and if you want your PC's to be wireless you need wireless network cards in them too, or you can still go the traditional cable way, because most wireless routers offer 4 ports as well as wireless.

lol there's a range for wireless, i mean if you have wireless setup at home doesn't mean you can access it like few hundred kms away from your house, otherwise id be using everyones net haha, but yeah... for my router its about 1kms indoor and 4kms outdoor range, but it ranges there maybe more. I'm not sure if USYD has wireless access points, maybe they do.

so if the syd.uni has a wireless access point, my laptop's wireless internet would be possible?
btw, how far is burwood from redfern...umm...several small stations away
maybe have exceeded the 4km limit already

even if it is 4km for sure, think about how much interference there is...
