I did the msn messenger connection troubleshooter and there were ticks for everything but a ! for the key ports. The description is that either my proxy settings are improper or my firewall is blocking it but i don't use a proxy and msn used to work fine with my router. How do i fix this up? I'm thinking along the lines of port forwarding msn? I have tried alot of stuff including changing internet explorer connection settings, but nothing has worked.

MSN Messenger 7.5.0311 is the latest version. Have you tried the "Repair" option in the Messenger troubleshooter? I've found that tends to work quite well in fixing my MSN connection issues. Apart from that, you may need to fiddle with your cookie settings if you can't sign into secure sites. Try clearing your cache, setting your IE Privacy options to "Medium" or "Medium High". See if any of that works.

Ok i tried the repairing and the cookie fiddling, doesn't help. I think it's something to do with my firewall blocking it.

I'm not sure if the expiration may have affected it. If it's expired (from memory), Norton simply doesn't let you get any updates. When did it expire, btw?

Another thing you can try is this: delete Messenger from Norton's Allow list. Restart the computer and do an application scan in Norton - it should pick up MSN. Allow MSN and see if that works.

It expired on 1/10/05, which was a week or so before the problem occured. I'm too late right now to try your latest solution (XD) but i'll see if it works and let you know how i go asap.

Reinstall Norton Internet Security (if you have the cd - or download the trial from symantec.com) and then uninstall it. That in effect refreshes all the files, and removes them.
Yep, playboy2enjoy's got that. His solution should solve your MSN problems.

Stupid Norton.

Try creating another user account and uninstalling it through that. You could also try nuking the startup process - Start Menu, Run, type in "msconfig", and go to the Startup tab. Find the processes that run out of the Norton Firewall folder (under the "Command" heading, look for C:\Program Files\Symatec\ etc.) and uncheck them. Hit OK, then restart. See if MSN works after that.

Ok i stopped trying to fix the problem for a month, and recently I noticed that my IP has changed?!! I still can't get access to secure sites, also when i try to go to system menus like ipconfig and msconfig and the windows task manager, they will pop up for a few seconds or less, then disappear on the screen completely.

OK, so:

* You can't access secure sites (I assume these are ones with logins)
* Your IP address has changed
* Msconfig, Task Manager, and IPconfig don't work correctly

The IP change shouldn't be too major - probably your ISP reassigning you an address, I'd think. But a few questions:

- Did you manage to uninstall the firewall?
- Does your dad or anyone else in the house run watchdog-type software on the computer?
- Can you access MSN?

Whoa interesting issue you got there...

Ok first things first, we're quite sure that its a firewall issue [Unless you've recently changed your router? or altered certain port settings in your firewall, or in simpler firewalls perhaps an alteration of protection levels? i.e.--> Minumum protection to Max Protect]

First, to make sure that your version of MSN isn't corrupted, I want you to re-download 7.5.311, and save it to a location you know of.

Next, download Your uninstaller:
Code:
I have been warned and will read the [thread=56511]IT Stuff Rules[/thread] before posting
Don't worry this isn't a hacking tool..

Run the program, apply the necessary cracks/serials. Next, I want you to uninstall your firewall, then MSN Messenger using Your Uninstaller [By simply running the app, and locating your application, it will delete all registry files, etc]

Then, you can either install MSN Messenger first, and try connecting to the internet to see if any issues have been resolved [be sure to do this fast, because heading into the internet without firewall protection poses security risks to your computer, disconnect your internet as soon as you're done checking].

If it does work, then I'd highly recommend you to switch firewalls, Norton is a really big CPU sucker... Download either Sygate Personal firewall Pro, or Look & stop. I use sygate, here's the direct download & crack for it:

Direct Download:
Code:
I have been warned and will read the [thread=56511]IT Stuff Rules[/thread] before posting
crack:
Code:
I have been warned and will read the [thread=56511]IT Stuff Rules[/thread] before posting

If you like you can scan the file contents, but it should be safe. Using Sygate you can easily allow access for specific programs to access which ports, or to block their traffic completely.

I wouldn't post cracks and serials if I were you. It's breaking IT Stuff Rules as well as the law. Delete those links out of your post, or the mods will do it for you.

I use Sygate Personal Firewall (freeware). does the job, but they've discontinued the products.

This just means that they wont be making any more upgrades to it " Effective November 30th, 2005 all Sygate personal firewall products will be discontinued."

It's alright tho because firewall is a different area to virus protection, there need not be any definition updates.
