but maybe you had to ask for one, that does happen at some schools.

Everyone that applied for one received one in my year. So yeah I guess at some schools you have to ask for one. My year advisor's handed out application forms that asked us a few questions. If we didn't hand it back in, we did not receive a reference.

I applied back in 08, though I don't think I actually ever recieved it. Though it definitely was offered.

I remember we got assigned or had to choose idk, a teacher who was gonna write our reference and we had to provide them with all the relevant stuff like what school activities you were involved in and your report results and any awards and ra ra ra by a certain date and they'd write up a letter for you. if you didn't give them anything you just got a generic "X attended this school from [date] to [date], all the best kthnxbai" reference.

I was lucky and got a teacher who loved me and was more than happy to ramble for a whole page about how awesome I was.

Just ask your school for one...unless they actually told you they weren't doing it anymore?

I was a school captain so I got one, but no one else did unless they asked a particular teacher.
