By that logic, Asquithian, a BA or a BSc (or any other degree) could be a waste of money, too, if the person didn't really know what they were after. Why not take a Liberal studies degree in order to keep your options open, especially if you want to study both a humanities and a science unit along with a language?
I thought about taking that degree, but the language component led me to take a BSc/BA.

lib studies is a bit of a take of the american higher education system, where everyone takes an arts-type degree and then decides wot they want to specialise in. if you really have no idea wot u want to study, or if you just have interests everywhere, then its not such a bad degree. but of course, you sacrifice speciality for range. and remember, i think you have to take some general education units for any degree anyway, so that might be enough to cater for ur interests outside the scope of your chosen degree. if you have a fair idea wot u want to do, go and do it, and don't waste your time dabbling with such a general degree

having said that asqutithian, the time frame for arts/science is 5 years whilst liberal studies is 4 years. i put liberal studies in my list of prefrences, simply because its a very braod course which you can major in area of interest in science, and if a person wants to work at a foreign country it would be a great advantage. it is also a great course if say you want to continue onto graduate medicine or graduate law.

I don't understand how the degree itself could be seen as either a waste of time OR all over the place-- it's highly specific; the fact that it allows for a greater degree of choice doesn't make it general, it makes it <I>liberating</I> 
It involves language study + communications (which is considerable) as well as the minimum of a science and an arts major-- meaning that in B Liberal Studies there's a greater possibility of doing more than one Sci or Arts major in the degree. From it you can also transfer into BLibStud (Int) for foreign travel purposes. I'd say it's perfect for a lot of reasons.
I want to do a Sci major in Psychology + 2 Arts majors, and then after that two more years of Psychology (MA or whatever). (Which is another point-- BLibStud is also a good avenue for potential graduate study.)

I was planning to do LIberal studies, but my mum spoke to the year 12 studies person from a school, and she said it is the best course on paper, however it is actually really bad and most people hate it

i can understand that there WOULD be a considerable drop-out rate... the course seems to expect a lot and to cover a pretty extensive area. but seriously, i'm dying to know, how can a course that is essentially science/arts + some language & communication be BAD? from an educational perspective it's as good as or better than sci / arts, considering the other stuff they include + the fact that its apparently easier to do more than one sci / arts major.

I don't think it is necessarily a BAD course, on the contrary it's quite extensive and broad and allows for a well rounded education.
But the reason i think for the large drop out rate is because a large number of people who do this course do not know what they want to specialise in at university. So after the first year, after doing a wide range of subjects from science/humanities, they transfer to more specific and specialised courses. . .
i think go for it, i've got friends doing it and are loving the experience!
