I'm starting B Computer Science at UNSW this year and I've been told that my course is full of guys which isn't that bad but many are like antisocial..

I'm a bit upset coz one of the main reasons I was excited about going to uni was to make new friends and I don't know how that will turn out now :/

How can i make new friends if what i've been told is true?

First year CSE/Engineering students all have pretty much the same courses, so you'll be meeting all kinds of people in your lectures (and tutorials) from numerous disciplines (you'll even have non engineering students in your Maths/Comp/Elective lectures). So that will give you plenty of opportunity to meet new friends in first year, but in 2nd/3rd year the courses become much more Computer Science specific so you'll probably be seeing some students in your classes regularly.

As far as 'Antisocial' goes, I'm pretty sure that's just a myth/stereotype...

I know some other girls doing computer science, I can introduce them to you if you want :) I also know some guys doing computer science, they aren't asocial at all - of course that's not everyone, but I'd wager there are lots of social guys in computer science.

as for societies, I don't know either, but I'm sure we'll find out during O-Week - maybe we can meet up and say hi then, if you want.

I'm a guy doing compsci who is very antisocial and would thus not be of much use to you.

Well I'm not sure if UNSW CSE does camps or something, but if they do go to that. And go to O-week.

Go to as many activities as possible, to increase your chances of meeting like minded people, BEFORE classes commence.

+1.

You are overthinking stuff, it will be fine. If you are really worried just join a heap of societies.

Yea that sounds good coz i went to an all girls school and i'm more used to being friends with girls. thanks :) Cool i mean I didn't think everybody in compsci was antisocial but now i feel more sure about it. Btw just curious what's the ratio of guys to girls in Compsci?

as for societies, I don't know either, but I'm sure we'll find out during O-Week - maybe we can meet up and say hi then, if you want.

Let me answer that with "Have fun being the only girl in a ten seat radius in lectures".

he's right... CS is notoriously girl-less. that's why they give huge scholarships for women in engineering and all that

omg you can't be serious..
It's computer science. Tell me how many movies you've watched which has a girl geek who sits around all day programming.

Comp sci kids are notorious for being basements. K17 is a literal basement in the comp sci building I believe, where guys park at 6am and game or do god-only-knows-what for the next 12 hours.

Sure, some aren't like that. I know one girl who does comp sci and isn't basement, and she actually met her boyfriend in K17 - but the stereotype is "guys who sit in the basement, literally, all day playing games and giving weird looks to any girl who happens to wander in".

Sound have done IT. ~24% of students in IT were female last year.

Enjoy CS though. I think CS opens up more opportunities in Software Development, than a pure IT degree.
