Um there is the risk that by surrendering to the demands the gunman may not hold up his end of the so called simple bargain. It's just as foolish to cave into the demands because it shows the gunman is in control of the authorities.
Its called negotiating . It has occurred successfully in the past in many instances. If the primary purpose is the safety of hostages then it is the only approach to take. Of course if the gunman does not meet his side of the bargain (which is unlikely) then initiate plan B...

writing soldiers to widows and telling them their husbands are horrible people makes you a fuckwit.
I agree, but that doesn't devalue his stance on the matter. I don't subscribe to the idea that a person can only be purely good or bad; there are elements of both in all of us. Only two days ago on his personal website Monis had written "Islam is the religion o peace, that's why Muslims fight against oppression and terrorism of USA and its allies including UK and Australia... Islam wants peace on the Earth... When you speak out against crime you have taken one step towards peace."

The quote definitely doesn't explain or justify his previous accusations and charges though. There's no doubt that he was suffering from instability of sorts.

As far as I am aware negotiations were attempted and I'm not going to speculate any further and jump to conclusions on what happened like you did.

The ABC has confirmed that Lindt Cafe manager Tori Johnson and Sydney lawyer Katrina Dawson were the two hostages killed this morning.

38-year-old Katrina Dawson was a Sydney lawyer, and mother of three. She was a barrister at Selbourne Chambers. Her husband is Paul Smith, a partner at Mallesons. She has three young children.

She studied law at Sydney University, lived at the women's college there, and did her clerkship at Mallesons where she met her husband.

34-year-old Tori Johnson had worked at the Lindt cafe since October 2012, and has worked at a string of other restaurants and hospitality companies around Sydney.

Former colleague Tony Manno who worked with Tori at Sydney's Adria Rybar & Grill for a number of years says he was shattered to hear the news this morning.

"Tori was a great guy, a good guy to be around got on really well with all the staff," he said.

9:39am:

Hostage killed in siege was Lindt cafe manager

The 34-year-old man killed in the Martin Place siege was Tori Johnson, the manager of the Lindt Chocolat Cafe, reports Nick Ralston.

Johnson had worked at the cafe for more than two years, and had worked in a host of restaurants in Sydney and the US.

22.50 The Australian has tragic details of Katrina Dawson's last day:
OpinionA morning coffee at the Lindt Cafe was part of her daily routine and when news of the siege became public, her family contacted her via text message to find out if she was OK.
When she did not reply, they contacted her chambers only to find her absent.
They immediately knew the worst to be true — that she was one of the 17 people being held hostage in terrifying circumstances in a siege that shutdown Sydney yesterday.
Dawson had been having coffee with a colleague from Eight Selborne, a friend who is understand to be about midway through her pregnancy.
Hopeful of a positive outcome, her children were not told that their mother was being held hostage at the Lindt Cafe in Martin Place yesterday and were being informed of the tragic outcome this morning.

The president, Jane Needham SC, has released a statement informing the association of her death with a “heavy heart and deep sorrow”.

Katrina was one of our best and brightest barristers who will be greatly missed by her colleagues and friends at the NSW Bar. She was a devoted mother of three children, and a valued member of her floor and of our bar community. Our thoughts are with her family at this time, including her brother, Sandy Dawson of Banco Chambers

It's not unlikely for them not to fulfil their side of the bargain at all - are you a fuckwit? Oh here are your hostages, my only bargaining chip which is preventing me from certain death or life in jail.

Not negotiating with terrorists sets up a general deterrent from them attempting to leverage hostages in the future, they know they won't receive anything for it.
