Whether it's tutoring(tutoring centre or private) or materials(textbook, past paper etc) : It is only as good as it is suitable for you.
For example whilst you did not find Dr Du effective for you it may be effective for others. Similarly for any textbook/materials.
As you do self-study or any tutoring a quick way to test that is 'are you fully grasping most (like 80-90% or more) of the main content'?
By 'fully grasping' I mean:
1. Given a similar question you can give a clear end to end solution that would gain you full marks (not 'somehow got an answer')
2. Do that in an efficient manner and within(and ideally well under for basic questions) time allocated for those marks in exams (not spending 10 minutes for a 2 mark question)
3. Be able to explain the solution or concept to someone else in a clear and logical way.
