I am currently year 8 and doing Dr Du year 9 maths but in the B class (lowest). I also did private tutor last term and now I have to choose between them. Private tutor is more like a personalised stuff and maths olympiad stuff and he sometimes gives me workbooks while for Dr Du, I just study one year ahead in the B class. If I choose private tutor I will be doing it once per two weeks because its kinda expensive ( for 2 hrs) and if I choose Dr Du I will do it online and once a week for also 2 hrs. I need help to choose between them

I've always been confused when people assume the solution to get better at a subject you're struggling with in class... is more class (Dr Du).

If you're really struggling with Math I'd suggest a private tutor so you can focus on specifically what you're having trouble with rather than a teacher just broadly teaching you everything.

I do admit, Dr Du seems to give students a lot of practice questions and as the saying goes 'practice makes perfect'.

Overall, I suggest only going to tutoring (of any kind) only if you need it. You can save your money on subjects you're good at by just finding the questions yourself (eg. thsc or textbooks).

Hope this helps and best of luck

Dr Du because I personally think private tutors are not good enough to get you into that competitive mindset, compared to how a class would, which is pretty essential when it comes to the HSC. Their homework is also a really good for practicing math leading up to the HSC too! And by learning one year ahead, you will be able to complete school homework ahead everyone and easily.

Edit: I'll start tutoring kids after my hsc and hopefully my marks are beautiful enough so keep a lookout Dec 2020 :)

Probably Dr Du since you get more classes out of it and the tutors are guaranteed to be decent/good whereas private might be iffy. There are some really good private tutors out there for cheap so if you can get a cheap and good one I'd probably recommend private since you can ask as many questions as you want and go at your own pace. I also think asking your friends to explain concepts helps you but also helps them consolidate their knowledge. I definitely think people in year 12 are worried about annoying their friends with questions but for example I spammed my bio chat with questions about even small details which I think helps everyone, and I think the same logic can apply to asking help with maths :)

Studying ahead in maths is good what you need to basically factor in is these things:
1. Who is the better tutor that you currently have? (in terms of things like their teaching style, do they give you help outside lessons by messaging etc)
2. What resources are available to them? (the tutoring centre will likely have more stuff but if someone is a private tutor for a few years they could have a similar level of materials that they can provide)
3. What is the cost and travelling time?
4. How do you learn best (online or in person)?

1. I really don't know because I haven't done dr du face to face for like 3 terms
2. Dr Du sure has stuff, my private ones been teaching for years and he opens a workbook store so he has all the stuff from yr 1 to scholarships to HSC...
3. Cost almost the same if I do private once per two weeks. dr du takes 3 minutes and private tutor take 10 min LOL
4. Person of course

Du is very specialised and more 'traditional' when compared to other tutoring centres (as you know)

It depends if you want that competitive atmosphere, or want to opt for 1-1 which will work more at your own pace

Would you consider going somewhere else for group tutoring?

Yep I'd say don't stress and burn with Dr Du. Try Matrix with a free trial - nothing to lose.

I'm also in year 8 right now, what was tested in the entrance test? I just want to be prepared...
