Looking at these forums it seems that no one here is applying for medicine. Is there anyone out there who is, and if u r did u get the first round interview

no and no, I reckon I couldn't handle patients very well and I don't want to be one of those heartless doctors . It'd be that or the mental breakdown, my mind does not cope well with sick people.

well doin law ur gonna be dealing with very sick people, both corporate law, money minded big businesses or in criminal law, so id rather be dealin with physical illnesses

id do law but i want out of this country

Very true. But you would meet such people everywhere in life, no matter what you do. Whether they are your clients, or your bosses in the hospital admin, you will still have to get along eith them.

Anyway I'm looking for a career in Asia and Europe, I speak French reasonably well and I'm going to take German again . Among other things, tax here is wayyyy too high and buying a house is a pipe dream.

You would just have to requalify. My cousin from south africa had her law degree from there transferred to here after attending some "updates" at usyd.

Also, we're mainly based on british common law, so there would be a basic similarity between us and a lot of other commonwealth countries.

Law also requires a previous degree as well (either as part of combined or graduate law). I would also want to work overseas, but I reckon that my commerce degree with a background in law would be sufficient for my international merchant banking career Besides M.B.A's at Harvard, Duke, Columbia, MIT are the way to go

If its something u want to do/like, it should not be disregarded on the off chance u may want to work overseas. Where there is a will, there is a way!

Maybe.

Depends where u go and what exactly you want to do with it. I'm sure there are ways you can transfer your degree.

Also - the new free trade deal with singapore has allowances for aussie lawyers, so that it is easier for them to practice there.

Lawyers move around, so there must be. Like i said before, nothing is binding. If you want to work overseas, there will be a way to work overseas. Call the law society if you want specific information.

i wanta do med........very much........got 1st round interviews.......uai was 95 not good enuff for general entry at unsw buuuuuut i might get in under rural scheme.........i hope.........i wish................oh it would be a dream come true........

Hey, someone with the same plan as me . Well, i'm not so certain about the merchant banking bit, but that's an option.

Re the point about Singapore - from what I hear actually being in Singapore right now, general demand for lawyers is weak as the local unis supply enough. Of course, intellectual property law and other hot fields are very good here and fields like that are inherently international.

Well thats the thing about law, it creates a lot of opportunities. It is also a good general degree in providing understanding, and can impress employers even if ur not directly working in the profession. Plus it appears to be fun - I'm *really* looking forward to it! My parents are laughing coz i'm dancing around going "i'm gonna be a law student". They then ask me (without fail everytime) "aren't u excited to be a commerce student", to which i whine "yeeeeeees, but it hasn't got the same connotations!" (and then I gleefully recount legally blonde moments ). Yes. I think I've officially hit rock bottom. Can't believe I'm recounting this on this forum. Maybe i'll develop some sense and delete the above before i press "submit"...

Anyway, the merchant banking bit is not for certain, maybe financial advising, managaement, investment banking etc...

I love the versatility of law, gives you longer to decide what you want to specialise in. At the moment I'm more interested in intellectual property, but that might change...was reading a magazine for IP law and it was not especially interesting. "Is their patent valid?" "Hell, let's infringe it and see what they do" "Is OUR patent valid?" "Sue them and find out!". Oversimplified but that is apparently a common situation .

I'm here in Sing till end of Jan/early Feb, depending on when we can get tix back. Confirmed for early Feb but we forgot that my sis has to go to school

yeah timii im up for a career in finance somewhere as well, investment banking sounds pretty mad and i guess a combined law degree gives you a great platform to launch from,

nevertheless there is much of a muchness between a commerce or economics degree with honours as compared to a strait com/law degree if you want to go strait into banking or finance somewhere, although if u have a law degree there are a few other options

im tossing up doing the honours route (4years) although i guess you could spend six at uni and end up with the com/law with hons. after 6 but i dont think i could be bothered to sit thru law lectures, crim law and torts dont exactly turn me on

yeah IP law is quite exciting, spent time workin at a law firm in an IP department, fun just lookin up the patent database to see if ppl have patented ideas like rocket cars and such yet =)

sif not 99 - I agree, law isn't strictly necessary for finance and merchant but I think it would be usefiul to have a good understanding of contracts etc when you're closing those big deals .
