I don't think I have to mention Mel Gibson's past films.

But anyway, it's about the Mayan civilisation 500 A.D.

I've heard that the cinematography is perfect, detailed etc. It is nominated for a few awards, including a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.

Trailer is here

Out on the 11th of January.

I'm watching this. I refuse to like it but I have a feeling I might.

i'm sure this will be a borderline-if-not-outright-offensive essentialisation of mayan culture, but man, i'm such a senseless gorefreak, so i don't give a fuck.

I'M THERE.

Did anybody see Waldo of Where's Waldo fame?

Believe me, he's in there. Why? Well ... I haven't a clue. I swear I didn't imagine him being there. Go look it up.

Most of the actors in the movie didn't speak english, also most professional actors who speak fluent english wouldn't have fitted the racial typing/accents for the movie. So if Gibson wanted any authenticity in the appearance of his actors then this was the best way for it to work.

The aspect I found somewhat lacking in the movie was the bluntness of the scripting and thematics (there also wasn't much of a pay-off) - it is not unlike looking at a story from an early writer. Which I suppose is somewhat fitting given Gibson's relative inexperience with directing. There's also a bit (well...more than a bit) of an over-reliance on the gore to shock the audience.

The acting could also have been way better however that is to be expected when most of the actors had never seen a film in their life. Which is one thing I have to credit - it would have taken a massive amount of planning and energy to get such an immense amount of people as your cast, let alone deal with language barriers and inexperience.

I give it a B-

^ great sig.

anyway, i enjoyed the heck out of this film. sure, it's insights into mayan civilisation are low (apparently, they say "fuck" and like to quote midnight cowboy?!), and it reminded me of a nutra-grain commercial on more than one occasion, but it's great popcorn entertainment. not as bloody as i expected, but that's mainly because i watched cannibal holocaust a few days prior. satisfying stuff, all round. and waaaaay better than gibson's previous effort as director.

and to the person who complained about the existence of subtitles; get raped, plz.

Saw it a few days ago.

This is a historian's worst nightmare.

But for storytelling's sake, it's very good.
