that's what i'm led to believe, yes
they need to be more competitive with their scholarships then... haha
considering the two big unis of nsw give 10k for .90 or .95, and these people give 12k to only 10 ppl.... not great, lol

It is more competitive, having more merely devalues it.

i mean as in, it should attract more students?
Yeah, it should really be more than 10 people...because UNSW gives 10000 for 99.90+ and USYD gives 10000 for 99.95+. And there are also various other scholarships that give more than 10000 (e.g. 15000 for Co-op)...

Macquarie = 12000 for 10 people...um...

There are a raft of new scholarships which are going to be aimed at equity rather than merit sometime soon, I think that's the main reason for the lack of scholarships. Also funding.

Er, what are you talking about? It's not 10 people, and I have no idea where you got that figure from. The scholarship is generally given to all students who get above 98.5 - very few students who have a UAI >98.5 get knocked back based on the rest of the application. The rest of the application is just to ensure you're not crazy and to show that you can perform at uni.

Well, I just got told by pwnage101 and others who attended some Information Day on Macquarie.

They apparently told them that it's about 10 people who get this.

ah, if everyone above 98.5 gets it, there'd be a lot of them
it'd be more 'competitive' as in students would like it more, lol

Yes, that's true. But we have to consider the possibility that most do not go to Macquarie anyway as they would slip off to universities like UNSW, USYD or UTS. On top of that, only people who apply can get the scholarship so many people who did not apply can be discounted.

So yeah, it wouldn't be THAT much.

are you sure about that? Because i have mates who had UAI's greater than 98.5 and didn't get one [and on the below link it says 47 ppl got a UAI of 98.5+ and went to amcquarie, yet only 10 ppl got schoalrships...)

anyways where i got the '10' figure from is http://www.futurestudent.mq.edu.au/undergraduate/CareersAdvisersDay/pdfs/scholarships.pdf

go to the 7th slide, and it says

2008 results-

124 students applied for the
scholarship. 10 students received the $12,000
scholarship.

and yeh as it says at the beginning it is the schoalrship program for 2009, and i am led to believe this is teh first or 2nd year this system ahs been in place (ie there used to be another system, then they changed it)

Oh thanks for that.

BTW, can you briefly tell me about the Merit Scholar Program?

Do you need to apply for that or...do you automatically get placed in the program if you get 98.5+ UAI?

47 people over 98.5+ UAI at Macquarie seems too low...

merit scholar is automatic for >98.5 UAI, but i don't think it does much for you....
Yeah I was aware of that. But I was just wondering why Macquarie only has 47 people over 98.5+ range.

If you got 99.90, would you go do law at macq?

or would you go to Usyd?
I would go to UNSW and put USYD 2nd chocie

and what does that matter anyway, ive heard macquarie uni law is excellent as well, so if it came down to UNSW/USYD with no schoalrship, or Law @ MACQ wiith 60 grand in cash over 5 years, id take the latter....

and what if people don't wanna do law?

I do believe that most of the high achievers will be doing either law or medicine. and I dont think macq has medicine (?) so no med students and I dont know if I would want to do law at macq. Ive heard its good for business, but ive heard law at usyd or unsw is best so I would think many students would pick other unis over macq. and at above 98.5, some would probably be getting scholarships at other uni's aswell

how many students would get above 98.5? about 1000 is it?

Roughly, there should be about 1200 people because 98.5 means top 1.5% of the School Certificate Candidature. There are about 70000-80000, so there should be about 1200 perhaps?
