and there's a new nightrage album coming out this year, i love that band too so im super keen on that as well.

from their wiki: "It sounds really heavy. Stripped down and in your face. The songs are a bit shorter and with fewer acoustic guitars than Wearing a Martyr’s Crown. I think so far, out of the nine songs there are no clean vocals at all. It’s a very pissed off sound, so it’s going to be a really heavy record. Lots of guitar solos and melodies there too of course."

only problem, i liked their acoustic bits in WAMC :[

their melodies have been excellent in 3/4 of their albums imo.

WAMC was an average album, but for me into didn't really progress into anything. The melodies weren't catchy enough to warrant more than a listen or two. This album doesn't sound like its really going to do anything new. Which is a shame, because as a band, I think they should great potential to really release some great stuff.

they have a very big potential yes, their first album (which they recorded with gus g who is amazing at solo's) had some really awesome songs, and their "a new disease is born" is my favourite of their albums.
wamc had a couple of good songs, but their instrumental was so good, best track on the album imo.

i guess their melodies have been excellent in 2.5/4 of their albums xP

Agreed. By far.

So you'd say their earlier albums have been better than their newer stuff then?

yeah!
sweet vengeance: tremor (has an awesome ending), glow of the setting sun* (very awesome), gloomy daydreams* (very good), in my heart, at the ends of the earth, the howls of the wolves (soft acoustic instrumental, very nice).
a new disease is born: spiral, reconcile* (love this song so much), a condemned club* (love), surge of pity* (love it too), drone. Every song on this album is good but the mentioned ones are my personal faves and are the ones i listen to, and the starred songs are among my favourite songs of all time from any artist.
sweet vengeance has a more raw-er sound to it (probably cos its older), but the melodies are still great, and it has the guy from at the gates doing the vocals.
defs worth checking out on utube.

their other album had a couple of good songs but i dont have it on my new ipod (i got the new ipod touch and a new laptop a couple of months ago, meaning i had to reobtain music, and make sure i keep the music that i actually listen to, since old ipod was an 80gb classic and current one is a 32gb touch).

Cool, I'll slowly work my way through the ones you suggested. You're right about tremors, the ending is pretty sweet. GoTSS has a cool groove to it.

Excellent, a thread on heavy metal. I had my doubts on finding a thread of such a topic.

Anyway, I've been listening to a lot of Woods of Desolation lately. They're a depressive black metal band from Wollongong, though I'm very doubtful on the genre label, and they're recommended for anyone into black metal and purely emotional music, with their recent Torn Beyond Reason being a start. Aside from this I've also been listening to the underground technical thrash metal band Aspid, whose individual musicians I have to say are ridiculous when it comes their instrument of designation. Extravasation, though I only got it recently, is getting a lot of plays.

I also got back from the show of self-proclaimed 'heavy metal comedian' Steve Hughes, which I will say as absolutely hilarious. You can look up his routines, though lately I've been listening to a previous band of his, Nazxul, who he drummed for in the 90s. I reckon they're brilliant with their epic approach to black metal and precise and reasonable execution of symphonics on their latest album.

I'm surprised I haven't heard of them. I thought I was fairly in tune with the music scene down here.

I seem to notice that a lot of people in Europe, especially Germany, tend to notice the band but not many Australians. You might not have heard of them because the only thing they do as a band is to release albums. No live shows, no physical advertisement, only two guys known as D. and Tim who write some passionate music.

I have the feeling that you might know of Grey Waters, for some reason. By the same D. and Tim of Woods of Desolation, they play depressive rock. They've only released one EP, but that EP is just amazing. Another band I have a hunch you'd know are Austere, who play a brand of music quite similar to Woods but preceded them by several years in terms of sound. Despite the fact that Austere are known in scattered groups across the world, them and the bands mentioned in this post are quite unknown in Australia, probably due to the terrible coverage of local scenes through semi-mainstream printed media.

Grey Waters and Austere both sound familiar. Though I can't say I've heard anything by them. LORD I know though, they're actually friends of friends. And I think Nightquest is another one similar to them, who I know people from.

I've quite a big fan of LORD and that is awesome to hear. Closest I can say to that is that I ran into Andy at Utopia Records some time last year, but I'm rather envious of your situation. I'm not familiar with Nightquest, though. They don't have a Metal Archives page so I can only assume that they're a relatively new band and with a name like that they play power metal, correct?

Yeah, power metal. I don't think they've been playing together for long. Though they're all quite talented musicians. They've got a gig coming up in the next few days, but I've got stuff on that night.

Woods of Desolation is okay. On the topic of Steve Hughes, he is doing some shows for the Comedy Festival. Check them out. Also check out his earlier death/thrash band, Slaughter Lord. Fucking great shit

That's fucking awesome man. Aspid is one hell of a band. Puts any "technical" band to shame.
