2003 HSC - models, theories and laws

we've got an assessment comin up, and one of the 'outcomes 2 be assessed' is:

1) Outline the ways in which models, theories and laws in biology have been tested and validated.

From wat i can remember, this was also in last years HSC.

So, any thoughts?

well i posted it in BOS cuz i thought it might be helpful. the main point was the underline and emphasis the main ideas behind using and developing models in biology with specific reference to the membrane one (cuz that what we doing in bio at uni)

queenie: read that thread if u haven't. u can apply the stuff regarding the membrane model (fluid mosaic) to models in general.

um its in the outcomes with the boxs at the front of the syl... .it was in last years hsc.. wat did u put for it xiao?

You could talk about Koch's postulates in SFBH, or about evolution.

The 2003 HSC question was:

Question 25 (4 marks)
You have carried out first-hand investigations that have attempted to model biological concepts.
Discuss the use and limitations of models when illustrating biological concepts.

I talked about how models may not be completely accurate, although they do help to explain the theory behind concepts by physically depicting how the concepts work. I think there was a question in the option Communication about modelling the ear or something, although I may be thinking about my trials or something.

- theory of spontanous generation
- germ theory of disease
- theory of the movement of matierals in the xylem and phloem

laws
-mendel's law of indep assortment
- mendel's law of random segregation

Models are only representations of the real thing. They emphasise key charcateristics and leave out uneccessary and insignificant detail to serve a purpose. There are many forms of models (maps, graphs, digrams). The USYD summer school course(problem solving and communication in science) taught you about models and their significance in science.

i talked about models in general for the HSC

we modelled meiosis and polypeptide synthesis in our blueprint/genetics mega-topic

good to see u guys discussing models maybe my thread did help

for an assessment we actually have to model the process of phagocytosis very fidlely
