I reckon the moderation of assessment marks is unfair, because basically all the marks we obtain from assessment tasks are useless, as the BOS only uses our internal ranks, and then 'transforms' our assessment mark to the respectively ranked examination mark obtained by the school cohort, in a particular subject.

So, for example:
I achieve a 95 Assessment Mark in English, with a ranking of 1st.
In the HSC Exam I achieve a mark of 87.
If my Exam mark is the highest, my assessment mark of 95 becomes 87, and then my HSC Mark for English is 87.

I think thats really unfair, because my school cohort isn't very competent, and as I'm ranked 1st for most of my subjects, it's likely that I'll get the top examination mark for most subjects (not saying that I will, but it's likely). But even if the top exam mark 85, and I get an assessment mark of 95, my HSC Mark will be 85. I think that's wrong, and don't like the moderation process at all.

Basically, all my assessment marks are useless, I just have to ensure im 1st in my class.

Moderation is the only way to ensure that their is equity across the state with internal marks.

Without moderation schools could, and many would, inflate their students marks.

With moderation schools are fully aware of what happens and thus mark to the HSC standard and should be close to the final marks.

Usually my top student will get moderted up slightly or be spot on the mark I give them. The only time they are markedly gone below my expectation was when the student left our a major question in the exam.

Students in different schools are tested on different exams & tasks.

Let's say I got 100 in some random public school with 10 people getting the same mark as I did.

And Let's say someone in Selective High School came first with 70 (unlikely).

When it came to HSC, I got 80 and the Selective School kid got 90. Does it mean I am more intelligent than the Selective kid who got 70 in the internal assessment? It will be that the exams in Selective High School are harder than the exams that I did.

Yea, but if you rank first in all your internals and first in all your externals it wont really matter.

The process of moderation benefits a lot of students too. In my school the average in biology is about 50%, because the teacher marks shit hard, but last year in the HSC, out of a class of 14, 11 got band 6's. It wouldnt be fair to students if their raw internal marks counted as they are all a lot lower than the HSC marks. And if they did use your raw assesment mark, teachers (especially in subjects like english where there are no 'right' and 'wrong' answers) will give students marks of 100, 99, 98... so that they get high UAIs and it reflects well on the school.

Either way, it is something that you are going to have to accept, because there is nothing you can do about it. You should just try your hardest throughout the year - to be ranked 1 in you internal and to get the highest mark in your externals.

How is this bad for you. If you can only manage to get an 85 in the hsc exam, than that means that your standard is only and 85, not a 95. hence your school mark of 95 is not band 6, its only mid band five.

moderation is good. without it everyone one would be awarded 100 for the internal school assessment, and that would be pointless.

if you think its bad, then that shows you don't understand it.

Hey cem. I read somewhere that in the moderation process, they try to make the min mark the same for school assessment and exam. But it is not statistically possible to make the mean, max and min marks the same for two sets of data. If you make the max and mean the same, and then try to change it so that the min marks are the same, then the mean changes.. Can you explain this please?
