I have a md player and it's fine. you can record *anything*.

This is off that site:

MD Player's advantage over MP3 Player

1.MP3 has to be edited by computer. Very few solid state MP3 portables can execute real time recording. MD, on the other hand, can record from any source (digital/analog) through just an optic fiber, coax line, or microphone.

2.MP3's sound quality is far more inferior than MD. MP3 was develop to compress data at the ratio 1:10 ratio. MD's ATRAC technology, on the other hand, was developed for professional music industry and compress sound data in 1:5 ratio by eliminating noises and inaudible frequencies, preserving the dept of sounds. MiniDisc can actually sound better than a CD. MP3 cannot.

3.The various existing MD equipments, along with the removable colorful discs and labels, be can be easily individualized to show different personal styles. MP3s uses non-removable media, hard to be personalized.

4.MiniDisc equipments' accessories are easily and inexpensively obtained audio accessories whereas MP3 players require expensive computer accessories (such as RAM) for best performance.

MP3 Player's advantage over MD Player

1.MP3 portable players use static memory to store audio data, eliminating skipping that is still a problem related to MiniDiscs.

the only thing MP3 players had that MDs didn't was the ability to transfer tracks, but now MDs are capable of that.

i just bought a new pair of sony e888s - the best consumer level earphones (check any hifi site) and they sound great with my (old) SOny R900....the earphones you get with sony mds are a joke

obviously i'm very pro-MD....hopefully some pro-MP3 opinions come up

how much was it ? i recently bought some sexy ones which were about $70, though nothing compared to the 100's of $$$ that some people fork out for those chunky DJ-style ones ..

with mp3 players, how many songs can you record onto the one stick thingo ..? like wha'ts the max ?

well ive got an mp3-cd player.... so u chuck a bunch of mp3's on a 700MB cd.... 700/5 = 140 songs on one CD... and if u put it in folders, the mp3 player reads them as albums..... pretty sweet, sound quality is alrite, but prolly better these days.. mines about 2 years old.... and oh yeah, it plays CD-RW aswell, so u can keep re-writing mp3's etc.. ive done it about 20 times now... and it plays average CD too.... CDA format

i got my earphones over the net from singapore for $70AUD inc. postage (australian RRP $130)

as for the mp3 question, depends on the capacity of the memory stick/chip/whatever....*i think* they go as high as 20GB now

which one did you get???

I bought a really really cheap one ages ago. I just needed something that plays mp3s, and the cd/mp3 player appealed to me cos of the price.

Depends how much you are going to spend on MD.
If you are in the $500+ MD range, then why not just buy an HD mp3 player, with optical line in and out, and then you can record as well. Plus you get FM radio, and external HD capability.

Screw MD.
Screw carrying around a little disk for every 80 minutes of degraded quality audio. As soon as you try to record on 'long play' or whatever its called, you lose so much quality. Mp3 is better than MD for sound quality.

Also, the new Cornice 1.5 Gb drives make for smaller than MD sized players.

Actually most people can't tell the difference between SP (normal mode) and LP2....LP4 on the other hand is a totally different story as its main purpose (or what most people use it for) is to record lectures and thus sound quality in that case is not really a top priority.
