I've recently been getting a really weird pop up... it's not an IE pop up... it looks more like one of those windows errors you get with the "Ok" button at the bottom. The title bar says "MSN Messenger" or "Messenger Service" or something along those lines. Some times it advertises for some Net Guardian or something... other times it's just filled with gibberish... I've tried scanning with Ad-aware, but it doesn't pick anything up... any idea on what I should do?

that isn't MSN Messenger it is called the Messenger service built into Windows 2000/ NT 4/ XP

it's used for networks to send messages to each computer, those advertisers randomly generate IP's and mass sends ads to people via this method, you need to turn off the service so that you won't get it anymore to do this for both 2k and XP

do the following

navigate to control panel, look for the folder administrative tools

for xp click on performance and maintenance thats where admin tools will be

there inside admin tools look for Services, open that up
down the list look for Messenger

right click on it and go to Stop

once that's stopped right click on it again and go to Properties
Under startup type select Disabled and click OK and that's it

your free from those messages.
