Depends. Which branch of law you going to specialise in ? Corporate, criminal, family, work for yourself as a solicitor etc ? Wanna work for the top 5 law firms ?

If it’s prestige / top law firms, usyd 1st, unsw 2nd then Anu. There is no 4th place as you won’t get hired.

for criminal, family law etc uni matters less and doesn’t matter at all if going down the solicitor path.

the most important question is do you want to be a lawyer ? Lots do the degree as an add on but never practice - they now have $85k debt or smth on top of the 5 year commitment

If it’s Newcastle v Macquarie v uts or wsu and you live closer to Newc then go there

I want to become a solicitor and try getting into the corporate side of law. I’ve heard that firms look for grades, and then uni but I may be wrong. So i definitely want to practice, I can also try moving to the more prestigious unis however I feel like that would be very difficult

If you live in Newc then for sure go there.

If you live in syd then go to a Syd uni.

no point spending $500/wk in rent, cost of living etc unless you are pushing usyd / top law firms. That’s $130k commitment right there.

Uni looked at before grades. Eg usyd atar is 99.5

im going to newcastle law and if ur around it id reccomend newcastle lol its alr so expensive to do a double degree, im doing com and law and i think its 100k maybe?? and i already live 5 mins to the campus so its definetley a better idea

  • Sydney:
    • Bigger legal market — more firms, courts, internships, networking events, and professional societies.
    • Living costs and competition (study and social) tend to be higher.
  • Newcastle:
    • Smaller city, lower living costs and less pressure.
    • Still within NSW legal jurisdiction and reachable from Sydney, but fewer local big law firms.

if you value practising more than how much youre going to be making, then I recommend going to the uni that will be comfortable for you rather than burning yourself out for prestige. In the end its how much you love studying law rather than the paycheck

unsw is beating usyd in law atp so anyone who prefers going to usyd is just chasing a title that doesnt entirely live up to its name

Employers in Sydney still treat Sydney law as more prestigious, as it's harder to get into. UNSW law might hold more weight overseas though, not for any reason other than the QS rankings.

whilst prestige/uni name is lowk considered as I've been told by numerous uni students, I have several friends working in big 4 as lawyers (KPMG and Deloitte) from Western Sydney uni. What matters most is networking and taking advantage of every opportunity thrown at you, these lawyers, when law students, took the initiative to apply for these internships + actually put effort into their work and personality, in their interviews and summer programs they were asked to come back and work as paralegals (and after graduating worked as lawyers) due to their attitude and knowledge.

There are Australian lawyers who work in London, Singapore and Hong Kong, with a few in America. But that's mostly as far as it goes for international transfers.
