UN has declared war, says N Korea

NORTH Korea said today the new UN resolution imposing sanctions on the country was a "declaration of war" and warned it would strike back at any nations that try to tighten the screws on its regime.

In its first reaction since Saturday when the UN Security Council voted unanimously to punish the North for testing an atom bomb, it said having a nuclear weapon was its right and completely rejected the Council's decision.

It also lashed out at the US, whose threats, according to Pyongyang, have made the development of a nuclear weapons arsenal necessary.

"We will deliver merciless blows without hesitation to whoever tries to breach our sovereignty and right to survive under the excuse of carrying out the UN Security Council resolution," a foreign ministry spokesman said.

"We will watch US movements and take corresponding action," said the unnamed spokesman, quoted by the secretive regime's official KCNA agency.

The official spokesman denounced Washington for insisting that its test on October 9 was a threat to international security - language included in the UN resolution - and accused the Council of overlooking US hostility to the North.

"This is an immoral behaviour utterly devoid of impartiality," the spokesman's said.

"The UNSC 'resolution,' needless to say, can not be construed otherwise than a declaration of a war against the DPRK (North Korea) because it was based on the scenario of the US, keen to destroy the socialist system."

Impoverished and almost completely cut off from the rest of the world, North Korea - officially known as the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea - had kept the world guessing for almost 20 years about its atomic programme.

It finally declared in February 2005 that it had nuclear weapons and carried out its first test last week, citing what it called threats from the US, which it believes wants to topple the communist regime.

The UN resolution imposes sanctions on the North and, most controversially, allows for international inspections of cargo going in and out of the country, in an effort to prohibit any illicit trafficking.

But the spokesman's statement, in line with warnings issued by the regime before the resolution was passed, cautioned that North Korea was ready to take action to defend its "sovereignty."

"The DPRK wants peace but is not afraid of war. It wants dialogue but is always ready for confrontation."
This is pretty far fetched from North Korea, although it would be somewhat expected from a country under control of Kim Jong Il.

I have the feeling that regardless of the efforts of the UN, this may well escalate further.

wow.. i thought it was settling down. definitely not a smart move by NK, but I do predict UN/US (and allies) will probably remove economic sanctions to avoid military intervention.

UN are pretty powerless and worthless + useless in my opinion it was evident when the american invaded afghanistan and iraq.

I can see that the North Korea will lose either way - there is no way that they we will be better off with a war or by just by keeping quiet.

the world has all the resources - north korea has its military and is dependent on the world for survival.

dont send them aid -and nk is pretty screwed - if NK attacks- they are attacking potential countries that might be able to donate resources - further worsening the situation.

it would be wise \for NK to cool down. and just continue on - rely on china and SK for aid with negotiation with them only.

But sif they'll go to war.

Kim Jong Il wants to live, he doesn't want to die even if he can take hundreds of thousands of people with him.

Re: UN has declared war...

If UN does not remove sanctions, NK will most likely fire nukes. Its 2nd missile, while its in development, can reach the US. The US should not intervene further with NK IMO, unless they dont care being hit by a dozen of nukes, then invading NK. IMO, i think NK will do nothing at this stage, since its missiles are limited, and they dont have much intention in firing nukes at China and SK, but Japan is more likely.

The US is dumb for not declaring that they are not going to intervene with NK further, this might make NK to at least cancel nuke production and refill their factories so they can at least generate income to feeds its people. IMO, US is the main cause of this shit and they should be blamed.

BEIJING (Reuters) - North Korea told a Chinese envoy it planned to conduct no further nuclear tests, South Korean media reported on Friday, raising hopes that China's diplomacy might force its neighbour back to talks.

Japan's Foreign Ministry said it could not confirm or deny the report, which came as U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was in Beijing to rally support for U.N. sanctions against North Korea, passed after it tested a nuclear device on October

Hotshot why did you bother posting if only to say something so...pointless?

Anyway I doubt the US are afraid of NK's missiles, Evergreen, since as you say its only in development. 'Sides, even if they did hit one city, they would then be blasted out of existence by the American weapons, and by their allies. NK are alone, not even China will help them attack the US.

that is a very unlikely situation. NK has no ICBMs, i dont even think they have missiles that their crappy warheads can fit on. Even if they did, americas missile defence system would take care of it.

Nothing is going to happen, nothing where nk would have the upper hand anyway.

Yes, goddamn the US for providing free food to the Korean people, they're the cause of all of this.

Them and their damned imperialism.

I never said NK was gonna nuke anyone. I said IF they chose to nuke, the most likely target would be Japan. Since this isnt the case anymore, then its pointless to discuss it. Anyway, Serius, how would you know the NK warheads are "crappy"? If you listened to the media, then you are being misleaded. CNN said NK's nukes were 1/10th power of Hiroshima sized bombs. Now thats complete bullshit, considering Hiroshima bomb was a very early atomic bomb, but NK has nuclear bombs, which are much much stronger.

Withoutaface, the US NEEDS to provide NK with aid, its part of their duty as being in UN and also the richest country in the world (power=responsibility). Now since Bush is a crackhead, hes not doing the things that will make NK a stable country.

It's good news that NK stopped nuclear tests, and aid should soon flow through the country. After Bush leaves office in 2007, NK shall see a better future.

umm...

Estimated NK nuke power: 1kT
Hiroshima nuke power: 10kT

1kT/10kT = ... 1/10.

It doesn't need to do anything at all. If i were the president of the USA i'd immediately cut off all foreign aid, leave the UN and kick the UN out of America.

I agree, especially since the Democrats gave them the nuclear reactors to build the bombs.

What are your sources about NK nuke power? Ok, if this is true, my point was the media holds alot of bias, obviously not in favour of NK. Also, then US wouldnt have any authority to attack the Middle-East if it werent part of UN. So, to satisfy their thirst for oil, they need to be part of it, unless theyre idiots and dont want to use their power to take over Middle-East...

Bush isnt giving NK any breathing space. Thats why NK is so pissed off and propaganda about Bush being modern Hitler equivalent is feeded to the people. That says a lot of things. NK think US is hostile, because it hasnt mentioned a thing about leaving them in peace, thats why Bush is a fucking idiot.

NK can't survive without aid because they are using an economic system that's been proven to be utterly wasteful and inefficient time and time again. The reason why the US does not need to rely on aid is because it's a country that was established on the principle of liberty, not oppression.

North Korea won't back down. Kim Jong-il is a fairly smart bloke, when you think about it. His whole card game revolves around propaganda to his own people, and manipulation to the international community. He managed to hold off U.S military intervention for quite a few years - bought enough time to get his first nuke up. Now he has them, he won't give them up.
