Baaaaaaaah Suck Shit Morris!
I don't believe you're leaving NSW, enjoy it forever.ShArBiNaToR said:Thats hard to say. I mean, not only has Labor utterly defecated all over the once respectable state of NSW, but im afraid that it may take at least ten years to fix the problems that were incured by 15 or so years of Labor in power.
Thnx NSW for another term of Labor in power, maybe this time you'll vote with your heads and not with your arses. You deserve everything and more.
Im leaven this shit whole state. Suck my ballz...
I don't necessarily mean pork barrelling/things which really only serve to try and get re-elected. I mean things such as the M4 East extension and the western metro rail line. Labor won't be able to blame the libs if they can't fund them (since they really shot themselves in the foot) but if later the libs try their hand at privatising electricity or other things in order to get the funds for such projects and labor stands in their way they will be quite able to blame labor for their lack of funds.zimmerman8k said:That doesn't really make sense. They are not going to spend so much on government advertising and pork barreling that they require selling of the state's power infrastructure to fund it. They are still going to spend about the same on trying to get re-elected and there are countless ways they can finance this.
Regarding point (a), what will they actually do differently that will result in better economic prospects for NSW?
NSW has been badly governed since the '70's. Although I agree it will take a long time to fix the problems labor has created. The whole NSW public service is completely fucked and seems totally incapable of getting from A to B without huge cost overruns and missing deadlines by years. That will take a long time to fix. One big reason I'm for privatization of everything and anything is that the NSW pubic service is so incompetent I think even a badly run privatized body would be better.ShArBiNaToR said:Thats hard to say. Government will also prepare a mini-budget. There is now a $7bn hole in the budget not including the $15bn of power upgrades which will now have to be paid for by the public rather than private sector. Metro line and the M4 East look like casualties.Following an emergency cabinet meeting last night, Mr Iemma announced a revised plan in which the three state-owned electricity retail companies would be sold, but the existing generators would remain in public ownership. The development sites for new generators will also be sold in the hope the private sector will not be deterred by having to compete with a public-owned utility.
The proposal is likely to arouse further anger among unions and opponents of the sale, but will not require legislative approval.
That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.Garygaz said:everything becomes more efficient once it's privatised

Do you know what the potential effect is of privatising our energy? If you think it will result in more efficiency or anything of the sort you're deranged. What it will do is give a private business power over our energy, with a monopoly and thus with the power to do whatever it deems neccessary to turn a profit at the expense of the people of NSW. Usually that means jacking up the prices. Since there is no alternative, we would be pretty much forced to accept whatever rates they set. Do you understand how completely stupid that is?
Unless I'm missing something, this is a terrible idea.
There's hope for Labor yet!Rafy said:Meanwhile Costa has said "I won't be standing at the next election"
That's not really the argument for privatisation in this case at all... It's more that the government cannot afford the upgrades, is not in the position to borrow the significant amounts of money they need to do so and in keeping these they will have to sacrafice other projects which are far better off being funded through the state government.incentivation said:It seems the only argument for privatisation is efficiency and competition. What about the idea of public goods? The quest for efficiency often results in services being diminished and public goods sold. Once sold, they're generally gone forever.
So how are your welfare and healthcare going lately my friend?zstar said:No you are wrong
Privatisation will force the energy companies to compete against each other which will lead to cheaper energy in the long run. Government cannot run anything, Everything government does is inefficient.
If I want bread I don't go to the government for bread I go to the bakers for bread. If you look at the history of the Communist states the power grids constantly crashed so power was constantly in short supply.
The government does not have the funds to build two $10 billion dollar power stations so where do you think that money comes from? Who do you think suffers from this?
schools, transport and other infrastructure budgets have to be reduced and thus us students will end up paying more for those things to keep those institutes running.
Government run electricity will increase prices once they introduce peak demand. Look at your electricity bills and you will see this.
probably not that well considering the state government would have had like $10bn more dollars to spend on healthcareSlidey said:So how are your welfare and healthcare going lately my friend?
Actually fairly well considering Australia has among the world's best welfare and healthcare to begin with. A small once-off chip from that pool won't send our welfare tumbling down. Though obviously it's not desirable, I'd much prefer it to our energy falling out of government control.jb_nc said:probably not that well considering the state government would have had like $10bn more dollars to spend on healthcare
welp, guess because it's "among the world's best" the government doesn't need to improve it. more babies to be born in hospital toilets from here to eternity!Slidey said:Actually fairly well considering Australia has among the world's best welfare and healthcare to begin with.
