welp, guess because it's "among the world's best" the government doesn't need to improve it.
That's a pretty retarded straw man to put up considering in just my last post I said the opposite: improvement is always desirable, but not at the cost of something equally important such as energy security.

more babies to be born in hospital toilets from here to eternity!
Yeah, good job. That happens every day.

This is a clear sign that our healthcare system is completely broken and needs to be discarded, because such a complex and constantly used system would never make a slip up somewhere, right?

lol @ "world's best welfare".
Oh, you disagree? Is there some reason you disagree or do you just find it unfathomable that Australia is good at something?

**transferring money from federal government to your pocket** = world's best
If that's truly what you think social welfare and universal healthcare are, I pity you. I really didn't think you were like that jb_nc.

For the record, I'm not on welfare, mate; I don't qualify. Strangely enough, it turns out you don't have to be benefiting from government subsidisation to notice extremist libertarianism is unconscionably detrimental to society.

I agree the health system (and education system) need massive improvement. But you don't strengthen one essential service by weakening another. That's just dumb.

Yeah, definitely better to live off the unpredictable and inconsistent charity and whims of the wealthy instead of uphold a basic layer of rights and support for all citizens. Those thieving homeless! Trying to steal my tax dollars!

Welfare - pfah! Bring on widening socio-economic divides and social Darwinism!

So if government's are so much more efficient at allocating resources why don't we have them allocating ALL resources and get rid of this evil market mechanism!

I'm far from someone to advocate any of that so don't even try to attribute it to me. My point to spiny norman is that obviously we'd like to be able to support all of our vital services but often this is unable to be the case and we have to give up one thing for another. Privatising our electricity really isn't that big of a deal... ask Victoria.

I see the argument about the exorbitant costs that will result from sustained public ownership.

But, why should we lose our public utilities all because the government mismanaged infrastructure investment and revenue over the past 12 years?

Because the government sucks at managing a lot of things. Welfare and healthcare are not part of that set. Communications (electronic, postal) and energy are a grey area.

Anyway, you know me, Dan. I love the free market insofar as it supports social welfare.

Best way to solve China, North Korea, Africa and the Middle East is through the free market. Once you've gotten somewhere with that, you start to bring back a little government regulation to focus on welfare.

The government should generally exist as an entity to monitor the free market and keep it honest, because in many situations, the 'invisible hand of the free market' does actually work.

lol, I know. I was agreeing with what you were saying in a silly way. Wasn't directed at you.

I'm a fence sitter. I'm more concerned about Australia's energy security in the coming decade, as well as keeping things Australian-owned, than privatisation potentially making life harder for consumers (I doubt it'd make it better or worse)

That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

Do you know what the potential effect is of privatising our energy? If you think it will result in more efficiency or anything of the sort you're deranged. What it will do is give a private business power over our energy, with a monopoly and thus with the power to do whatever it deems neccessary to turn a profit at the expense of the people of NSW. Usually that means jacking up the prices. Since there is no alternative, we would be pretty much forced to accept whatever rates they set. Do you understand how completely stupid that is?

Unless I'm missing something, this is a terrible idea.
LOL yeah I'm sure the Government won't make any regulations governing what the privatized power company can do.

Electronic communications? You mean like government provided email?

As for the postal service, despite the fact that it's subsidised heavily as all fuck you've still got private companies popping up and providing a successful, alternative service.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression that phones and the internet are electronic, right? And they are communication mediums, right?

So, would I be correct in saying that they are electronic communication?

I don't know enough about how Telecom fared after its privatisation to comment. I'm far more supportive of communications privatisation than energy privatisation, though. It might be an illusion, but the way I see it that's one step further from government control. Which is one step further from potential censorship, snooping, or regulation. Until the big record and media companies buy it up.

Re: postal: Yeah, I know. I don't like it when some random private company handles my shit, but whatever. Like I said - grey area. As long as the private companies compose the minority of postal traffic I'm fine with it.

Not as sore as you must be each night after you're done anally stimulating yourself with your rifle.
