Lets say someone is by far on top in terms of internal marks in their three subjects (internals around mid 90s) and then there's a big drop off to the next internal (mid-to-late 70s) then an abyss. How does this affect the HSC results?

For example lets say the guy that has done well all year has a bad few days and gets around a 72 and second rank does pretty well, around 70. Would the 72 get weighted up due to internal performance?

No, person who came first gets 72 (if that's the highest mark in the whole cohort). Doesn't matter how much he/she came first by.

What if for the internals your 1 mark off the top student, but you tie with him in the hsc. Does he still beat me by 1 after moderation.

Hypothetical scenario:
Internal marks:
1st - 88
2nd - 87
3rd - 84

HSC exam marks:
1st - 94
2nd - 93
3rd - 88

Will the 2nd student get dragged down due to 3rd's performance?

Wouldn't think so?
