The crime isn't actually failing to display your P-plates, its failing to comply with the conditions of your licence.

Like all crimes, police can use their discretion, but if you aren't displaying either of them then it would be hard for them to let you off on "they fell off" grounds. On compassion grounds they could (chicks generally get away with it lol) but guys with their hats on back the front can't take a breath with out getting fined.

2 demerit points, $179.

When does the law come in that you have to display P plates on the outside of the car? I don't intent on complying with that when it does so hopefully I won't get caught.

To do it all the time is hard and takes a lot of focus. I always do it during double demerits and a significant amount of my focus is off the road and onto the speedo.
Its very east to control the speed, I can do it without even looking at the speedo. First I reach 50km/h, then I maintain acceleration accordingly, I know how much acceleration by the engine noise, the car's reactions etc/

I see people trying to do that all the time. Get to a long or steep hill and they don't brake enough and accidently get up to 60km/h before they notice and brake harder. I doesn't mean they aren't safe drivers. They are at least trying harder than most people. But under new laws this would mean loss of license for p platers.

ACtually it does mean they arent safe drivers, if they cant control their speed then they should have got their licence in the first place.

the first things you need to learn as a driver is controlling you speed , braking and steering - I mean these are your basic skills.

If you cant control your speed on a hill then you shouldnt have been a given a licence.

you can always practice - its not like the government or any other insitution says dont PRACTICE driving.
They are giving us a choice to practice some people dont need to and other do, the last thing I want is the institution to force us to practice!.

It doesn't mean they can't control their speed. 6km/h is nothing.

Well where did u mention 6km/h? I didnt say 6km/h, between 0-10km/h is ok, but you shouldnt be cruising 10km/h above the speed limit, overtaking etc its ok.

Just missed a dog that ran on the road today (kid let the leash go on, i dont blame him he was very young).
Road was downhill and was a left kink, also quite bumpy.

I admit i was speeding, around 60km/h in a 50 or 40 zone (yea thats another problem, there is hardly any signs around.)
Anyway coming down the crest i see the black dog right in the middle of my lane, brake hard, feel the front left tightening up(I dont have ABS, its also the spare tyre, bit more worn). Release and move smoothly to the right (over double lines). Doggy survived and we all lived happily ever after.
I bet at least 1/2 or even about 7/10 P platers would've just slammed on the brakes, locked up and slid into the dog. Child wont be very happy!

Also today i didn't put P plates on as i was in rush to and from (lol) work.
Guess what, right at my street is a cop car. Just dont look like a worried idiot and driv sensibly(or like an adult) and they wont give a shit.

schoolies2004ersonally Id like to go to a track and push my car for eg said:
Do you have a bike or are you interested in bikes? I think they are cheaper to take on the track. I have a friend that works in the industrial modeling industry. Anyway he specialises in alloys used in aircraft. He converted his whole bike to that material. Very light and very strong, looks quite nice too:

He takes his bike very often to OP with his mate for testing.

Doesnt work, i tried it and ended up with a big fine... I even had one of the cops on my side, wrote a letter of appeal naming him, explained the situation [late at night, picked ip dad from the club, but was sitting in the parkinglot for about 5 minutes before he showed and drunks prolly stole it for a joke] and basically theres no way in hell you can get out of a fine unless you have held your license for like 10years...

It all comes down to attitude.

Too many young mostly male drivers who think they are best drivers on the face of the planet. They drive fast because they think they are better drivers than everyone else because they 'know cars' and have done a defensive driving course. Too many of these people end up wrapped around telegraph poles with their brains splattered everywhere.

Slow down and drive sensibly. A great majority of public roads are for getting from A to B. If think you are some super skilled driver after a year on the road and a defensive driver course demonstrate your super skills on a race track and not on a public road where you can hurt some innocent.

They usually give you 10%, not 10km/h. If you are going 50 you can get busted for speeding if you are doing 56, in a school zone you only need to be going 45 to get fined. If its a cop with a radar gun and not a camera they can use their discretion and allow a little more but with this zero tolerance thing I think its more likely that they will use less and less discretion.

At least we aren't in Victoria where you can get fined for doing 3km/h over the speed limit.

And apparently you aren't allowed to speed at all when overtaking, even when its 1 lane each way and you need to go on the wrong side of the road to overtake. If you can't overtake them without speeding you shouldn't overtake.

Overtaking is for going around people who are going slower than the posted speed limit.

Love how the new police action is only targetting P platers.

Fucking discriminatory laws. Awesum
I know. God those 2 ads piss me off.

"Police.. now targetting speeding P-platers"

It's funny, because before these ads, police weren't targetting speeding p-platers.......

Everyone says discrimination as a joke but is it really?

Lets say someone stumbles upon some statistics that say women are equally as bad as p platers and too many are being killed in car accidents. If the government then started making tv ads that said...

"Stop a woman from speeding and stop a woman from dieing"

...they would be pissed. There would be anti discrimination lawsuits all over the place. The fact that it is possible to group p platers by their age and driving experience is irrelevant.

The difference is that eventually P platers become fully licenced, older drivers. After one year these changes won't apply to them as they get their P2 licences.

There are laws that say under 18 year olds can't buy alcohol or cigarettes, and they're not allowed to vote or gamble or have a credit card either. Poor kids are so hard done by.

Because statistically they become better and less likely to kill themselves. If statistics said that women were horrible all the time and they were restricted all the time people would claim discrimination.

Not all P platers are under 18. The only P platers who will be free of restrictions when the do turn 18 are those that get their P's on their 17th birthday and then go for their green p's on their 18th birthday. Plenty of 18 year olds (i.e. adults) will be restricted even if it is only for a couple weeks or months.

So they can deal with the restrictions. Oh noes, the speed limit. Of course a lot of the reason they're only restricting P platers has to do with what the voters want, but it does make sense because it's only temporary- you don't stay a P plater forever.

Really I think the main aim of the restrictions is to encourage new drivers to have good habits, rather than prevent their deaths. If you know you can go 15km/h over the speed limit and keep your licence if you get caught, you're more likely to do so. If you do it often enough it becomes a habit, and I'm sure that's something the RTA wants to nip in the bud.

i dont quite understand this statement!!! ive learnt that the actual offence is Fail to display 'L' or 'p' plates on car as required!! i believe the offence is the non display of p plates as required, you cant have one without the other!!! please feel free to correct me and another 10000 police officers

i think it should be mandatory for all p plates caught of any offence to lose their license for a period of at least 3 months, or alternatively have p platers put through driver school, or you can just be made to scrap young peoples brains off the road as punishment, cause im sick and tired of seeing wasted youth wrapped around a telegraph pole

So basically it is discrimination and if they were doing it to any other group there would be outrage. That's the point I am trying to get across. It just so happens that as a group P platers don't have the power to object and somehow respond like another groups would.
