Very interesting question. I turn my computer off everynight before i sleep. I heard that its better to leave your computer on 24hrs, because turning the computer on & off can damage your hardware. Apparently the solders on your motherboard expand and contract when the computer is turned off and on, due to heat.

Think about this:

Do you leave your TV on 24hrs? NO
Do you leave your mobile on 24hrs? YES

I never turn off off my comp and it working finely. Only bad thing is that it give off alot of heat which can turn your room into a steamroom >.>.

No, a computer typically uses around 100watts per hour, so it would cost about 1.5 cents per hour to keep it on.

*8=:) So to keep it on every night for a year would cost around $70.

I have a computer in my house that has been on 24 hrs a day for something like 8 years... except for blackouts and when we go on holidays and no one is home.

Not as if its pumping greenhouse gases out like trucks o_O

Leave it on, the HDD can go bust if it is turned on and off.

my computer now has to be on 24/7.

because my computer is now a gateway computer to the internet.

it's been running fine for 7 days now.

CPU temps are at 70 degrees though.
if i turn my fans on 'medium',
they go down 55-60.

if i turn them all on high it sounds like a jet, and i can't sleep

Get a router? :p

I have two PCs here that are on 24/7. One is a file server - its only a PIII 733 so power consumption shouldn't be a big a deal, the other is an AIO E1400 thats a development server so its configuration is minimalistic too.

I bought one of those consumption meters that was on Zazz the other night so I'll find out exactly how much power these machines use very soon!

fukn lazy

dont hard drives have a certain lifetime (no of hours), so if u leave the PC on all the time, u put the HD at risk?

I cant leave mine on, coz the fan is too noisy, cant sleep.

At the end of the day, is it really that hard to click start, shutdown??

Hard disks also have a certain lifetime (number of spin up/down cycles), so turning your PC on and off all the time, you put the HD at risk also.

Not if its doing things overnight!

also leaving a pc on for 24/7 increases will kill approximately 1.2 polar bears from their natural habitats every week

Christ, the PC goes into sleep mode, the only things going in the bastard is the MoBo, The HDD and the Fan and all at minimum.

Next you will be saying CFC's didnt cause the giant hole over Antarctica,Laptops did.
