There are a number of tools out there that can convert your files into PDF form. However most of them are not free.

PDFs can make documents smaller, but in most cases it'll just end up being larger.

Why not just zip up your documents? Do you have alot of images in your documents? Are they bitmaps (BMP)?

Adobe Writer isn't freeware, you have to purchase it.

converting to pdf means that the layout etc won't change when you send it to your friends :) that's what makes it so useful..

look for a pdf conversion program on google. there are a few freeware ones out there. they usually make you 'print' to a file :)

I suggest openoffice.org, its a hefty download but its a completely free alternative to office that should be able to open up 99% of word .doc files with no problems and has a export to pdf function built in that i use myself for uni work and which works perfectly

I have to agree....openoffice is fantastic for lots of things. But be prepared for only 98%* compatibility with your word files :(
