people who do subjects that mainly focus on one area such as :
-4U maths/science
-Essay writing(ancient & modern history,Bus., Eco.)
- Creative subjects(Arts, Drama, Hospo)

do you find that its an advantage to do this?
on a side note is anyone not doing any MATHS or science at all?(please name), what uai you got?

Last year a girl from my school did adv/ext 1 english, ancient, sor1, music 2 and ext, visual arts, and she got 94.4. And I think 2 years before that a girl got 99.6 at our school? (I think, mid 99's or so), however she did mathematics, but it didn't count.

I'm doing 4U math, 4U science, 4U english and one thing I have to semi-disagree with on is your grouping science with math. While 'science' and math are sciences, science doesn't have a whole lot to do with math in the HSC. If you can solve a quadratic equation then you're over qualified. A lot of your marks in the sciences are earnt by your ability to express yourself and your ability to comprehend concepts. These skills are required in both math and english.

That aside, I believe that only taking subjects which require you to use the same style of thinking can be beneficial if you, personally, are geared towards that manner of thought. Ultimately I think your level of interest in a subject is a more important factor in how you acheive in a subject. I would also suggest that a diversity of subjects might allow for sustained interest due to diversity.

I hate the technical/humanities dichotomy.

I'm sort of grouped: 3 unit history (Ancient + Extension), 3 unit maths, 4 units of science (chem and physics) plus Advanced English, the bane of all subjects!

a girl i knew did all creative subjects - dance, drama, visual arts, 4u english

she got 99.XX, no maths or science.

That was 2 years ago though. And she was the principal's daughter, who use to be a HSC marker of some kind.

yeah.

does ext history own ext eng 1?
Yes, yes it does indeed! All you have to do is memorise a few historians and a historical debate, and write up an essay or two, unlike evil extension English where you have to go on and on about meaning, symbols, motifs etc etc.

4u computing (IT/SDD), 2u maths, 2u eng, 2u business, 2u science

my strengths are computing, maths and science, unfortunatley im not too good at BS/Eng, althought ive jumped 39 positions from 60th/130 too 21/130 in business, that still also took a little bit of effort out of subjects

for example, when i studied for SDD, i found that it ate abit into IT, and I could relate the too, if i could redo my subjects id do 4u computing/4u science/3u maths and english

an awful lot of people seem to do 3u and 4u maths...hell i hate 2u! not that its hard...its just that our school arranged it so u could pick maths, or u could pick general maths, or u could pick visual design which is not a uai course anyway. i envy the people who do not do any maths at all, they are saving themselves stress! having said that i wouldnt drop math though - but only because i need a uai and am already doin a non uai course. i do ext 1 english, which is great, better than normal eng.

with the specialization thingy...i think it depends on ur strengths and to a lesser extent the scaling...i think if u pick 4u maths, chem, physics, bio and economics, for example, youre gonna stress urself out majorly unless ur really smart n prepared to study. but on the other hand if u do dance, drama, art, music, and 4u english, ur also gonna stress out coz of all the major works and the fact that sum of those dont scale well.

so to sum up i reckon if u want to specialize thats up to u but i wouldnt recommend it...better to have a spread across a few areas for variety.

well i do 3u history, 3u maths, 2u science, 2u english, 2u of legal.

well personally iw ould think specialisation would be literal and technical, and physcially practical.

i would think that humanity and language subjects would be the more literal subjects. while your science, maths and computering subjects would be your technical subjects. the rest would be the physically practical subjects.

2u english (adv), 2u maths (gen), 2u science (bio), 2 language (german), 4u 'humanities' (mod. + geo)

Specialisation? Ha.

The only subjects which ever overlap slightly are bio and geography, but that was for prelim with ecosystems. I just picked a bunch of random subjects which I thought could hold my interest for 2 years. None of this 4u english/4u maths/4u science for me ;)

some people say specialising is good coz you use the same way of thinking, and if you're good at one subject, then you're normally good at the others as well...

personally i think that doing subjects that are totally different would allow you to get away from doing the same thing all the time, and hence less stress...

i do 2u Eng Adv, 4u Maths, 3u Music and 3u French
