Re: Is society & culture worth continuing?

Hey peoples :)
I'm in year 11 and can't even decide on a topic for my MINI pip! Its due in 6 weeks but i've got stacks of other assessments 2.

Anyway, i'm trying to decide what subject to drop nxt year, i'm considering legal studies but then .... is SAC good/worthwhile? will SAC be too stressful? especially the PIP?.............I'm so undecided. ANyone got some advice on that?
and also advice on general getting ideas for PIPs would be terrific!

One more thing (the last, i promise!) does anyone actually do wide surveys of like 50 people for their PIP?......and where's that site that outlines how to do your PIP?

share the love xx

Umm personally i loved SAC in year 11 but hated year 12, Legal Studies I actually dropped however I would of preferred to drop drama.

PIP any of your hobbies or things you can do that you can relate to course concepts, start earlier like as soon as your in year 12 cause i left it to last term and im fucked

"The role of anarchism in a post modernist society". Personally, I think it's brilliant. >.<
best pip topic i've seen on these forums.

@WTF!BBQ

when i get unbanned from my other account, i will make a thread for a "PIP Showcase".

@Bleu

when i get unbanned from my other account, i shall create a thread on why you MUST do society and culture, and the benefits of the PIP.

And to answer your questions:
Society and Culture is an excellent subject to do! It is ALOT of work though, but by being consistent throughout the year, your hard work will pay off and you will not only have enhanced your writing and analytical skills, but will become a socially and culturally literate person. Some people find S&C hard - and it CAN be. But generally, it isn't, so long as you keep up and ask questions when unsure about your work.

Now, the PIP...

BEST THING YOU'LL EVER DO. It prepares you for the assignments given to you in university. You learn to undertake both secondary and primary research, and critically analyse your findings. The beauty of the PIP is that you're given the liberty to do it on ANYTHING - AS LONG AS IT RELATES TO SOCIETY AND CULTURE. You may feel that you're unable to decide on what your PIP should be on, so maybe you could start off with looking at what interests you most out of the following:

  • Belief Systems
  • Popular Cultures
  • Technology
  • Sport and Leisure (be careful here! You can't write about your favourite sport - relate it to a few S&C concepts! Class and Status would be excellent)
  • Gender
  • Environment
  • Cultures, traditions and customs and
  • more
Also, "wide" surveys are mandatory. For the PIP, a minimum of 50 surveys should be distributed (this also depends on what other methos yer gonna use. its best to stick with 100 surveys). Here are the outlines on how to write the PIP:

Grim Reaper...

thanks for the advice, VERY helpful!!!
Your right, completing a PIP would be extremely satisfying and rewarding...shame about the 'work' side of it. The key is definately to start early.
i'm thinking i will continue with S&C, l'll see how i handle the yr 11 PIP.

Starting early (November) would be the best thing to do - you will have less to stress about later on.

My advice is to start thinking a few general ideas during this time, and, by December, have a topic developed. During the summer holidays you should begin your secondary research. Just remember that you can never fully complete your secondary research as you may find new articles online/tv reports/ books etc that may be of relevance to your topic.
During term 1, conduct your primary research (this is not hard as people make it out to be) and by mid term-2 start writing and finishing off before term 3 starts.

My topic is "Is music today solely for private enjoyment?"
I altered my question quite regularly throughout the process, though. Bad move.
I discuss political expression in music and the creation of a counterculture, popular culture icons of music in the past and question the lack of 'icons' in our generation.
I also talk about technology's impact on the music industry (mainly through the arrival of mp3 players) and how enjoying music was once a 'group activity' ie. listening to records with families and friends, and being tuned into the same radio station as each other. This differs to the use of file-sharing and iPods as we each have our own niche compacted into portable players and it's much more of a 'private' enjoyment.

And it's done! Complete. Handed-in. Waheyyy.

Havn't thought of a sutiable question (thinking something along the lines of.. Has people who played gamers lost themselves within the game.) or a title for it buttt..

It is basically about gaming ^^.

SO FAR (hehe) chapter headings are;

E-Sports the online Olympics.

Who Plays What.

MMO Epidemic.

(a name that has to do with gaming online culture, eg 1337 speak, norms and all that shabang)

(something to do with violent kids whose parents blame it on games, or something)

The worst part of deciding your PIP at the end of year 11 is the fact that we have only learnt about personal and social development and communication. And my piece of shit PIP reflects that - Adolescent individuals use the internet as a means for persoanl and social development. How genius. So my advice to all new PIP starters.. hold off on your topic, because I could have completed some great work on issues of equality and difference. Congratulations all anyway.
