A friend of mine wrote an essay for hsc english 6 years ago and he gave it to me. I used the general gist and direction of it to write my own essay but its pretty similar. Would I be caught for Plagiarism in the HSC?

Don't use the same quotes, find other quotes in the movie that are similar and suggest the same stuff and try and reword/rephrase the explanation in your own words. Also, try structuring the paragraph differently, as in swap the sentences around or even swap the paragraphs around.
