okay, i shall start this thread, because i believe it will help me AND others.

Okay, I'm a yr 9 student (I'd say im mature enough to participate in this forum) of some school (edit post :p), belonging to a selective stream (our school is partially selective). I am curious about the calculation of the UAI and a couple of other little educational pricks (no pun intended). A few questions, i will be asking, thank you very much.

1. I understand we get marks for different subjects ecetera blah, but, really, how is the UAI calculated? Based on percentiles like those god awful UNSW competitions in primary school :):):):) (BRAG: i topped the state in the computers one, utterly pathetic.) just for laughs.

2. My school is a rat-arse crackpot school, with comprehensives kids having fights every day (and marijuana). They're fucking idiots, bottom feeders. Will this affect my HSC and UAI?? If so, how? (Prop up my mark or drag me to oblivion).

3. Is it worth it to try for another school, to try improve my studies? I'm considering Hurlstone Agriculture, but i heard if i make it and enrol, i might have to do Agriculture for YR11 D:D:D:D: :eek::eek:

4. If do apply, apart from the proof of academic acheivements, what else is worth adding, (HAHS KIDS, HELP ME MAN!). Some of my interests/strengths that arent taught; include music:headbang:(you know what like :haha::haha:), and sports.
+++ im a very social outgoing type of person, carefree and very amiable.

5. What the fuck is clashing!

thanks guys, this forums great, i thank in advance.

sorry for the long thread

P.S. im actually the alpha male at my school, who also happens to give a shit about my future ELL-OHH-LOL

1. UAI is a rank, it is the percentile in which you go in (this includes the drop-outs at year 10). So for example, 50 UAI might not be the median score as heaps of people drop out at year 10 so usually the median UAI is around 65. However, in the extremely rare case that noone is to drop out, 50 UAI will be the median UAI. Usually there is around 20 ppl in a grade that scores 100 UAI.

2. This will not affect your UAI as the UAI system is designed to be as fair as possible. For every HSC subject, you receive a rank which is an indicator to how you're doing and your rank will impact on your final HSC mark dramatically. Being ranked 1 in a crackpot school (as you say) like your school, will not impact your mark dramatically but will infact have a positive impact.
However, if you're ranked lower, say 20 out of 25 people, that means that you will be brought down significantly, meaning that you won't achieve the marks you want. So what I'm trying to say is that going to a bad school won't really effect your UAI negatively but in the case that you do badly compared to your cohorts, your potential UAI will be brought down significantly.

3. Yes, if you believe that going to Hurlstone will benefit you, then you should change schools as quickly as possible. However, in the case that you believe that you won't perform as well in terms of ranking and everything else, you should consider not switching as performing poorly against your cohorts will bring vital factors such as self-confidence down dramatically.

4. Umm, I personally don't go to Hurlstone but I believe that you should show your sporting achievements such as trophies and awards you have received in the past. Extracurricular activties will help you get into the school. Combined with really good academic achievements, there will be a very high chance that you will manage to get into Hurlstone.

5. Clashing?

5. Clashing? Do you mean when teo subjects you want to do are on the same line, and you have to select one (or do distance ed?)

Lolz. Come to Hurlstone, we get to play with cows and stuff. I made it in yr 11 and the process mainly consists of: App form, Test, Interview. Apparently the app form does not count much cuz yeh, when I made it into interview deputy was like "..your talent is reflected through your test results blah blah..". The exam hall was pretty intimidating, like the entire hall was full - azns and all.

But yeh, no worries I came from a waaaaay tryhard-nevertop200-school and still made it :]

Try for hurlstone, it'll help yo UAI and u get to meet the occasional bogan.

UAI is a rank. Half of it comes from your school assessments in Year 12 (the marks don't matter, only your rank compared to everyone else in the school and the gap between the marks) and half of it comes from the actual HSC exams at the end of the year.

Yes your school does matter. If the rest of the cohort in your grade does shit, then they may pull you down (unless you come first in both school ranks and HSC exams).

Always try to get to a better school. More competition, more motivation and they won't pull you down as much.

The only thing you need to change schools is a good report. This means you need good ranks and okay comments from your teachers.

Clashing subjects? When there are two or more subjects that you want to do on the same "line" in the set timetable.

P.S. The alpha males would be in Year 12. We also do not give a shit whether or not you are an alpha male.

QFT.

If you don't want your cohort to affect your HSC marks in any way, then just come 1st in all your subjects... or better yet, last.
