Please help
What is a good material in compression for the members of bridges??? High tensile steel is excellent for tension but what is the material for compression???

in bridges like arch bridges, where the majority of force is in compression, concrete is a very common material.

concrete or masonry materials such as sandstone

BUT

if you want to be abit more directive it would be reinforced concrete. (tell me how do you think the concrete will bind together and stay in form?)

FYI - reinforced concrete is basically concrete with steel reinforcement in it.

Pre-stressed concrete works too

Pre stressed concrete is only used when the member is likely to be in tension as well. ie, like a horizontal beam. When there is weight on the beam, the lower side is in tension, but concrete is really crap in tension. But pre-stressed concrete puts the whole block in compression, and the lower side is not in tension, but in reduced compression
