The NSW government will this week introduce new legislation that will ensure anyone who murders a serving state police officer receives a full life sentence, Premier Barry O'Farrell says.

"It's unacceptable to me... to the community and others, that police who are murdered don't have those responsible sent to jail,'' Mr O'Farrell told reporters in Sydney on Sunday.

"This is about ensuring that there's the strongest possible message.

"Those who murder police will be locked up for life."

A life sentence would mean for the rest of the convicted killer's natural life, NSW Emergency Services Minister Michael Gallacher said.

if you kill a cop you're in gaol for life.
if you're a cop and you kill someone you're doing your job.

makes sense to me.

Why is their life valued more than those of regular citizens, that their murderers get life while other murderers may get less?
Unfair imo.

I disagree with this on so many levels. Disgusting that we are valuing some humans lives more than others. What a double standard!

Perhaps lifetime imprisonment for any party found guilty of any murder would be a more fitting punishment.

all the people in life imprisonment are going to eat, shit, sleep and watch their prison tv all on you. a tiny percentage of society will be complete leeches and not have a tiny bit of productivity squeezed from them whatsoever. the cost of imprisoning them could potentially harm society more than just letting him off.
So are you basically making the implication that we should release murders because there is a cost associated with keeping them in jail?

No, that's not the answer.
Off with their heads.

the death penalty solves very little
it does not reduce crime rates
all it does, in my opinion, is offer closure to the victims family and friends
