i dnt know where i would send mine. see what they want and enrol them in a school that is 'strong' in that area

What is the point of private schools, in the 2008 school rankings, 8 of the top 10 rankings went to government/public schools. Also fair enough private schools are good at times, but i see private schools ranked 300. and 400. These kids pay much more money than government kids do and there marks are not really showing for what they pay. So in the end what is the point if private schools if they do not go well academically?

Given that private schools account for less than half of all students, I think they'd still outperform overall their public school counterparts...Just at a huge price. If you ask me, doing well as a student would probably have more to do with the family you're brought up in rather than the quality of the school. Sure, quality has an impact...But you spend more time at home than at school regardless. The reason why public schools, say, in the outer west or south of sydney often underperform IMO would be more to do with the socioeconomic background of their families, and therefore the families' attitudes to schoolwork. People of similar backgrounds tend to bunch together, this is why I'd think this occurs. Personally I'd almost certainly send my kids to public schools; a better all round experience of people in society, not some weird filtration of rich kids.

How ammusing you instantly assume that my parents are poor just because I go to a public school. My parents are not "financially challenged" and that is not the reason why i go to a public school. They sent me to a public school because the statistics show that there was no real difference between private and public schools.

And just because you go to a public school, it does not immediately mean that you learn "drug street values." What you tend to find is that, children who have attended a public school find it easier to socialise with a variety of socio-economic groups whereas those who attend private schools will only socialise within that group.

Now, im not saying private schools are completely useless. They definately would have better resources, but i doubt that the quality of teaching would be any higher than that of a government school.

Seriously? I go to a private school and I consider myself pretty lucky, but that's just because the school fits me. I don't think I'm any better than anyone else...
Plus, going to a private school does not = filthy rich.
Anyone who works hard enough has potential, as you call it, no matter where they're from. I know people at my school who aren't going to do that well in the HSC and are just going to fall back on their family money and lead verrrry boring lives.

All state schools, regardless of whether its selective or not, have lots of government funding issues, I know my school does. We have outdated textbooks etc, but as a cohort we strive to do well and we do.. so it's not about what kind of material benefit you have from school but it's what you put in, i.e. good work ethic.

There's no real benefit in terms of books in attending a private school. If you go to a government school you could spend all that extra money on your own set of updated textbooks.

It really depends on what the student makes of their education (be it public, selective or private) and not the amount of money their parents/guardians are willing to spend on it.

I'm currently in year 11, having gone to a fairly prestigious private school for my high school years, but this year changed to a public college.
I don't really have a preference between the two,
but I feel that the public college will prepare me "better" for adult life after i finish year 12, than the private school, as the general atmosphere in the college is a lot more realistic to the the outside world, than it was in the private school.
As far as fees go, my annual college fees are the equivalent to 2 weeks at the private school.
Due to the TCE (equivalent to HSC) being a state-wide thing, I had no real doubts about my academic results, as both private and public schools have to provide an adequate schooling system to complete the Certificate.
As I said earlier, I really have no preference between the two, apart from missing my old high school friends, as they are still all together, and I have moved on.

I went to a public primary school, and I go to a private high school now.
I know that I can't really compare the two, but what I've realised is that no matter where you go, all kids are the same. There are the kids who want to do well, and then there are the kids who are just there.
Our school does have a hell of a lot better resources than the local public school, but our HSC results as a whole school aren't spectacular.

also btw i went to a public school. last year our PUBLIC school got first in the state for textiles and the year before we got first for economics. our resources are what you might consider 2nd rate in the eyes of private schools. but yet we still do well,

let me close by saying no matter what school you goto it is up to the individual to what they make of their lives. not the institution they are enrolled in.

The public selective schools are ranked higher than private schools because they already had the smart students. If James Ruse had all shit ass teachers they would still be ranked pretty high up. The rankings really don't show how good a school is. If a school in a low socio-economic area like Mt. Druitt got a ranking in the top 200 imo that would be more impresseive than a selective school coming 50th.

I would send my child to a private school as public schools have shit resources.

I got a Public school and last year we came first in the state. It's been like that for 12 years. I don't pay for school. We are the richest public school in NSW, topping even Hurlstone who have like 100ha, and have more money than a lot of small christian colleges and stuff. And we still get cash from the government. Top that =D

Private schools are very stereotyped. I go to a private school, but my mum works one job and my dad works two to send my brothers and I there. Alot of the time the difference is the ideals that school is based on. Not only is there the "prestige", but my school has a large focus on catholocism, to an extent to which you would fail to find even in the catholic schools.

One criticism for private schools is that some tend to develop a "bubble" that removes the students from some of the realities of the real world.

just putting it out there, i go to a private school although i wasnt sent there for the academic but for the sport. fully fledged private schools are better on the whole than even government sport schools. theres alot more activiteis in general and opportunities that present themselves at a private school than a public school.

just for the record on a all-round schooling basis i believe private schools are far better, but i would have preffered to go to the local government high school

State selective, preferably, but state schools are fine, e.g. Strathfield Girls, Homebush Boys and Burwood Girls.

Generally speaking, private schools boast great resources etc, but it's the state schools that dominate the HSC ranks, academically speaking. All state schools, regardless of whether its selective or not, have lots of government funding issues, I know my school does. This being said, the only decent private school seems to be Sydney Grammar, haha.

i agree... i went to strathfield girls until year 10, and it was a pretty good school
personally, i would prefer any kids i might have to go to a selective school rather than a private school
