Well, I am going to give it a go despite English not being my best subject. I want to do it because

-Want to do EX2 in Year 12.
-Want to get rid of one of another subject really badly, but have nothing to replace it with except this.
-Have heard it's far more interesting than Standard/Advanced.

So, what are the advantages and disadvantages? Lot of work? Do you think if one is not passionate about English, they won't do well in it? You may be wondering why I want to do EX1 if am not good at English; I don't know, I just want to do EX2 in Year 12 and if I feel like I don't try it out, I will regret it.

Thoughts?

Yes, english ext is definitely more interesting than advanced, and gives you more creative freedom.

No, its not a lot of work for 1 unit, essentially you spend the entire year 12 working towards 1 essay and 1 creative writing (one hour for each in the hsc)

And even if you're bad at advanced english, you might find you're doing better at englishext, so if you do more than 10 units, your advanced doesn't have to count.

It also comes down to what teacher you have, and what topics they do, and how much interest you have in them.
Like in my grade, people do sci fi, crime fiction, romanticism, textual dynamics, navigating the global.
And they're all REALLY different, so if you were stuck doing say romanticism and you were really interesting in say, crime fiction, then that would kinda suck for you (but i know some people have changed classes)

What do those electives involve? Like in crime fiction, do you look at a lot of crime texts? I dunno, it might be a really stupid question, but just wondering.

Apart from those just mentioned,

Advantages are: - It'll help you with improving your english skills and thus achieving higher in advanced.
- Widens your scope for learning other texts.
- Sounds pretty awesome and complex!

Disadvantages: - Quite a lot of work for one unit (i might disagree with tambam)
- English in general can be a bitch (1 more unit of it!)
- Hard to bludge in unlike some other 1 unit subs *cough* Studies of Religion *cough* Sports Science *cough* Ext1 maths *cough* (nah i kid, Ext 1 maths will rip your balls out :p)

Depends on what topic you get. If you get it - try to do Textual Dynamics. It was awesome.
