Hi, I am a current Year 12 student and wanted to see if you guys at Macquarie could provide me with some information.

What are the subject prerequisites and cut off scores for a Bachelor Of Arts/Psychology/Diploma of Education ?

Your help is much appreciated.

Hey there

You want to know the cut-off for Ba-Psych Dip Ed?

It was 86.10 to have a spot in first year 2006.
For a Ba-psych it was 85.00, and if u made this I am sure you could fit into a Dip Ed later.

For psych, there are no subject prerequisites, that is, u dont have to have done any subject in year 12 to enter it. However, in first year you must do statistics, so doing Maths in year 12 would be helpful, but not essential. Stats isn't actually that hard, so dont be worried if u dont like maths. For arts/education I have no idea about prerequisites, i doubt there would be any, because the vast majority of art/humanities subjects dont have any.

Also, go to mq.edu.au and look for 'HSC and Beyond' - there is a heap of information for prospective uni students, i remember using it in year 12. Have a look, Mac has a really good website.

Hope that helped

It's nice having first years here now to answer these questions. I, and the other third year psych students, barely have enough time to eat, let alone answer such an important thread coherently!

ditto in also being very interested in arts-psych with dip ed [psych hons went out the window long ago], but during these little exams im now preparing myself for social science/work.
went to mac's open day this year and one of the lecturers told the room you can get into your originally intended degree from any other provided you do well in it [credit/distinct averages], or something to this effect.. is this true ? and how competitive is getting into honours year ? depending where things lead me/what new interests pop up, im hoping to also do postgrad to specialise.
also spoke to (dr?) julia irwin who teaches first years, and she said i could come sit in on a lecture, but-would i look out of place..?:p
i heard its also possible to download lectures from the net for lazy students, is it accessible to the public ie me ?
sorry for bombardment of qs, suppose id better get back from thinking about future plans and put some sort of effort into hsc..

i probably have made about 10 posts saying this, but:

if your very much interested in b-arts/psych and get in, then honours is certainly NOT out the window. it is very much possible, and common, for people in the barts-psych degree to mimic the requirements and then transfer into honours in 4th year if they maintain a certain gpa. in fact, thats were most honours students come from - a barts-psych (or Bsci-psych). Julia Irwin is nice, and if she invites you to do that, you should consider it! you wont look out of place your only a few years younger than the others (and theres actually a large age range anyway). To fit in, just take a notepad, pen and wear thongs... and dont come into the lecture theatre in your school uniform!!!!!!!!!!!!! :p

No, you can't access the iLectures, because they are on WebCT, which requires your student number and password. And even then, you can't access other unit's iLectures (ie. you can't get psych if you are a BBA student). You only have access to the units you are doing. :)

Ooh, and not all units have iLecture's. Some you have to attend in person.

thanks cyan_phoenix; it didnt occur to me not to turn up in uniform [id only been told not to wear the yr12 jersey]. i get the impression people have done that before..?
and thankyou to maryjane too, i had a feeling it was far-fetched but checked just to make sure:) ive a friend whose older sister does psych so i could possibly get them through her.
now looking at my fat book on undergrad studies for mac and arises another question - the degrees of bachelor of arts and bachelor of arts-psych are slightly different, yet wouldnt they be the same- you major in psych in both of them[or at least i will with BA]? the BA-psych says here its APS accredited, but the BA isnt..does that mean you cant be a member, or cant be a recognised psych full stop? i just want to choose the path that will lead me to becoming a registered psychologist-!
also, to become for example a school councellor, ive been given mixed messages-do you do a degree/diploma as well ? like, would i be able to do BA psych, and the dip in ed be towards working in a school ? or does that just mean you can work in a primary school, and the postgrad you do after is what will determine your type of psych, be it school councellor or whatever..
would it be possible/easier [its got a different name, so i presume, as usual:)] if i dont get the marks to do say, get into BA, do units that would contribute as much as possible towards a BA, and after a year do graduate dip in psych, then honours..? oh the choices, and im so indecisive.
thanks again for all your help, prepare to have more questions thrown at you closer to the new uni year:)[or tomorrow- cant think of any right now]. must be off to cram ahem study a whole new sub for tomorrow..
i really need to change my study habits
