when we write something with a log, do we write like

1 - ln (x+a)

or

2 - ln lx+al

The only time i've ever used absolute values for logarithms are whenever i'm applying calculus to them..

I'm not entirely sure when you have to use them though.

You use 2 in MX2 when you integrate.
Definitely never got told that. I'm aware that you're supposed to have absolute values around, but no one has ever specifically said it to me at school.

Use the absolute values. It's according to the standard integral table. You can't be marked wrong. It's mathematically correct.
