top 5ish for everything except modern say top 3.

assuming you go to a ranked school.

if you go to a terribly ranked one like mine.

you would have to be top 2 for everything.

Here's a tip, instead of worrying about your ranking and trying to figure out where you need to be, how about you try studying harder to lift your marks? (whatever they are)

Because ranking is all about a comparison of people, you can't change it in any way unless you make sure your marks are great to get a solid UAI...so just lift your game rather than wasting your time thinking about it.

at a selective school i'd say at least above halfway but since you're at a non-selective i'd say top 10% at least! (maths general you would want to be very high)

It's hard to say as it depends how smart your fellows are. If they are extremely smart, you can be satisfied with a rank of lower than 10. Otherwise try your best to come first in everything 'cuz nothing is predictable. Only being a top student can confirm you a solid UAI above 90.

i dont think school ranks are pre-determined, they are determined by how well each school does on that particular hsc in that subject.

basically, if you get a great mark in the hsc and a great rank, thats good enough for 90 +.

worrying about ranks isn't the best approach. . . just focus on improving and doing well in each task.

Your school's ranking for you HSC won't be known until after your cohort has done the HSC as your cohort is the one that is ranked.

The school where I teach dropped over 300 places between 2006 and 2007 but we still got about 10% of the cohort over 90 UAI.

The school's ranking is based on percentage of students with a subject over 90 but you can get a UAI with marks in the 80s.
