My ultimate aim for this year is to get an ATAR of 90+

So I was just wondering what sort of ranks do you all think that I should be aiming for in my subjects (listed below) in order to achieve this..?

Note the number in brackets is how many people do the subject at my school

English Std: (~100-110)
2U Maths: (27)
Physics: (17)
Biology: (27)
PDHPE: (32)

Also, my school was ranked ~130 for last years HSC and Im guessing we will be somewhere close to that again this year

Thanks :jump:

There can be a range of ranks applicable. E.g. a bad rank in one subject may be counteracted by a good rank in another, you get what I mean.

I guess an example would be,

English: 20/100
Maths: 10/27
Physics: 7/17
Biology: 10/27
PDHPE: 10/27

or something along those lines

so you are saying that if I am able to get the ranks above, and providing that my cohort does fairly well in the HSC..

I should be able to get that 90+ ATAR I hope for..?

slyhunter is about right, i was originally going to say top 10 for most anyway

top 13-15 for all is probably borderline?

okay well getting in the top 10 for all my subjects is a realistic goal for me so thats pretty sweet..

but then how we go as a cohort will play a big role in what ATAR I get so what sort of external mark (HSC mark) should I be looking at trying to get for each of my subjects in order to get an ATAR of 90+..?

the atar calculator will compute that for you

im guessing around mid to high 80s for everything, no lower. High 80s and one or two 90s to be safe :)

Ohhkk yeahh Ive played around with a few of those atar calculators..

Ive heard that the BOS makes a cut off for bands each year like, for instance, in physics they will say that getting 75/100 in the exam will turn into 90 (therefore a band 6)

Its this "90" that appears on your HSC certificate and is used to calculate your ATAR like what the atar calculators do, heyyyyy..??

Yes.

That "75/100" is the raw mark. The 90 is the aligned mark, which is what you use in those calculators.

Thanks :spin:

Do you know roughly what "raw marks" for each of my subjects aligns into a band 6 or high band 5..?

Judging by past raw marks posted by BoS members (note that it changes every year) for band 6s,

English Std: 90~/105
Maths 2U: 95~/120
Physics: 75~/100
Biology: no idea
PDHPE: no idea

Wrong.
1. Get out half yearly exam timetable sheet.
2. What subject does everyone do? English and Catho/SOR1/SOR2
3. No numbers for English Standard. Numbers for english advanced, Catho, SOR1 and SOR2.
4. Catho + SOR1 + SOR2 - English Advanced = English Standard = 98

That mark was simply the raw mark required in the external for a straight 90 for that component.

It does not reference internal marks.

Pretty good? WHAT?! lol
We ranked 138 last year.
Year before we ranked 179ish, but we had higher ATARs and one guy came 2nd in state in English Standard.
But last year we had like 21 kids with 90+ and a lot of high 80s, but the top was only 96.8 or something.

While we're talking about ranks..

I'm aiming to get 95+ and wondering where I should be as well in my grade. These are the amount of people doing the course.

Mathematics: 120
Mathematic Extension 1: 61
English Advanced: 101
English Extension 1: 15
Biology: 80
Chemistry:60
Visual Arts:40

My school is ranked approximately 100

Thank you :D
