What is the raw score for english std. that will put u in the band 5 or 6 bracket. I know in advanced it is usally 84-86/105=band 6. so what is standard?

i remember my teacher telling me that by doing eng std, getting a band 6 is not achievable. Is that the case?
I assume to get into a band 5, u need maybe at least mid 80's or low 90's but its just an assumption

english standard will require the same raw marks as english advanced as they both scale the same

Thanx so far, But does anyone know what raw score equates to a band 5 then? And altohugh it is considered inachievable, its not impossible, 0.02% got one last year.

Someone at my school got state ranking for eng std with a mark of 95

his trial marks were no where close to your estimate, more like 20-25 marks short
that is way overly exaggerated

no dude, very very very few poeple get band6s in standard... and standard people aren't dumb, so i'm guessing cutoff for band6 in advanced is maybe 100+ out of 105

i dunno alot about this, but i heard only a handful (20?) of ppl who do standard english get a Band 6 (ie aligned mark >=90) in HSC Standard English, even on the scaling report it shows like 0.1% get a band 6

yea, i think it'll be easier to get 84+/105 than 100+/105

dp, no way is advanced cutoff > 100/105, i got 80/105 RAW in the trial, dont think i improved more than 7 marks, even with easier marking, and still got 92 external, 94 internal

the badn 6 cutoff has to be in the 80's somewhere

Band 6s in English Standard are plentiful. The top mark in English Standard for 2008 was 96.

From 2008 HSC data, 0.23% of the state candidature in English Standard achieved band 6 (see http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/ebos/static/BDHSC_2008_12_15130.php). The total candidature was 32 334, so that equates to roughly over 70 students achieving band 6. This is TRIPLE the amount last year in 2007. Expect it to rise even further for 2009.

I'm pretty sure the Advanced and Standard cut-offs for band 6 are about the same.

I think my raw mark was about 75/105 and that led to 86 aligned, so band 6 in English Standard should be roughly 85/105 raw. A 100/105 for a band 6 cut-off is absolute rubbish.

Keep in mind that Advanced and Standard do a common paper. The reason for a low percentage of band 6s in Standard is because they don't perform as well as Advanced in Paper 1.

The marks in Paper 2 are "scaled" to follow a similar distribution to Paper 1 so that neither Advanced nor Standard are advantaged or disadvantaged from doing a harder/easier Paper 2.

If a Standard student excels in Paper 1 within the combined Advanced/Standard candidature and repeats that level in Paper 2, then it is highly likely he or she will score band 6.

Yeah, dude, sevety four...
i think 100/105 is maybe a bit high.
but probably at least 95

and yea, i got a 96 in advanced. it's much easier to do well in advanced than top standard.

OK, so I read your rewritten post.
I still think the cutoff for Band6 standard is much higher than that of advanced. seventy students is not a lot at all.
consider the highest mark in standard is 96 (which i got for advanced) and that the highest mark in advanced was 99. now, the top of each candidature should be quite equal in skill (topping 27,000 people is about the same skill as topping 34,000). so the raw marks for 96 and 99 are similar i'd expect.
this means that the aligning for standard is harsher

also, how do you know that your 75 raw went to 86? did you request raw marks? or is it just speculation

that's just what I tihnk, please don't call my thoughts absolute rubbish in the future
