i seem to have a similar problem as a lots of others here...ie too many movies and not enough other texts....perhaps a social comment??? pffftt

anyway besides newspaper articles and other tv shows are there any particularly good text types that ppl can recommend?

Plays, poems and songs all work well providing your main text isn't a play or a poem.

You can also use interviews and speeches.

I'm doing Erin Brockovich as one of my text, but should i focus on the film techniques, or on the actualy plot(and what they do to cover up truth)?

And is game show the movie where the guy is winning, and then one day, he is told to 'loose'?

For Erin i'm focusing on the plot (i.e. with quotes) and then using a lot of the techniques used in the film (there lots of obvious ones to do with cameras, characters etc.). The techniques remain pretty similar throughout the whole movie which is why i'm focusing on the plot.

And yes that's the right game show movie. Although I suggest using an article on the internet about the 1950s Quiz Show Scandal that the movie is based on. A lot easier than analysing a movie!

Hi yall,

The best possible supplementry text you can use if you are doing Frontline is the "Recommended revised MEAA- Code Of Ethics"

In english it is the rules that journalists are supposed to follow.

For example,

Standard 14: "At all times of grief or trauma, always act with sensitivity and discretion. Never harass. Never exploit a person's vulnerability or ignorance of media practise. Interview only with informed consent."

You can see why this is good... I think it's quite funny actually.

I don't have a copy of this text as I don't have a scanner, but I'm sure it would be on the net somewhere.

Yeah, some people have talked about this - sounds good.

The last three exams i've had (english AOS, business studies & design and technology), have all had a question on "ethics"... looks like I'll be writing about it in english2 as well. The Board of Studies already seem to be obsessed with ethics.

yeh, thats the point of the whole representation and text topic. we have to look at texts which talk about the truth, explain what the text shows about 'telling the truth' and then back this up with how each text tells the truth...

pity i didn't do that for my trial today...bah! :(

I don't get it. How do I related that to Frontline or truth? I've only learnt The Siege and Playing the Ego Card at school. And will probably just use those two in my coming up assessment. So can anyone tell me how the Code of Ethics relate to those two episodes? Also any good materials for those two and where can I find them?

I didn't think of actually using it as a text - but just as a reference

A good text is Orwell's 1984. Its easy to link the control of the truth by those who hold power, also the control of truth through propaganda.

Our school has been shoving this whole media thing down our throat, so we've been given countless texts on the current Gareth Evans/Cheryl Kernot affair.

However, I'm using Man On The Moon and The Mad Farmer's Liberation Front as my texts.

Hi,
About the sup material for fronline i'm using a song from the John Butler Trio called 'Media'. I dont know whos heard it but its perfect for the module and relates perfectly to Frontline...Also another band to look at would be Midnight Oil, your bound to find some political lyrics in their about truth or misrep's of it
later ;)

i know this thread is old but im wondering about the code of ethics mentioned earlier.
could you use it as a supplementary, or is it just good for reference. some of the points are so conflicting with issues in some of the episodes of frontline

Only quote directly what is actually said or written. Otherwise paraphrase. Meaning and context should be accurately reflected.
At times of grief or trauma, always act with sensitivity and discretion. Never harass. Never exploit a person's vulnerability or ignorance of media practice. Interview only with informed consent.
Never knowingly endanger the life or safety of a person without informed consent. Exercise particular care for the welfare of children in reports involving them.
could u use this as a supp if your other had the same pts as frontline. so one that conflicts and one that supports??
