Parallax error: The apparent displacement of an object as seen from two different points that are not on a line with the object. For eg, when viewing the meniscus of a liquid within a burette, the eye must be at the exact same level as the meniscus so that the volume scale can be read correctly

Thickness Gauges: a radioactive source and a detector can be used to monitor and control the thickness of materials such as steel sheets, paper etc. the amount of radiation recieved by the detector depends upon the thickness of the material: thicker material absorbs more radiation. strontium-90 (half-life 28 years) is commonly used.
