Hey all.

Just wondering if anyone could help me out, i'm doing my PIP on the freedom of Youth in Aus. compared to the 1980's. But i need to find more Rites of Passages that we go through, and the age that we do.

Could anyone list any? I've already got -
Get a job- 14 years and 9 months
Learner licence – 16 years
P-plates – 17 years
Smoke and drink alcohol – 18 years
Leave home – 16 years
Vote – 18
Marraigable – 18, 16 with permission from a court and parents
Consent for sex - Nsw 16

And also, does anyone know the legal age for the Emancipation law?

thanks.xx

last year we did a whole english unit on rites of passage.
In addition to those youve mentioned we also talked about the less official ones like maturity, understanding self etc. (our text was Maestro by Peter Goldsworthy)

you can also have starting school, starting highschool, passing sc, hsc, christining, year 10/12 formal (which has become more like a rite of passage), debutante. Also if you consider the different races and religions in Australia atm there are lots of cultural and religious rites of passage also. It depends on how specific you want to be..

anyway hope this helps

Do you also plan to focus on specific cultural/religous groups within the Australian society or are you just going to study the 'youths' in general?

There's also age:

  • Sweet 16
  • 18
  • 21st
