Well I'm undecided whether to try out for school captain or not. All my teachers, especially the head teacher of my grade which I'll be working close with if elected recommends it for me. But I'm still unsure about it.

What are the pros of being a captain? Does it help significantly when trying out for Uni? What are the cons of being a captain? Missing out on periods due to assemblies? Lack of time management? Interfering with your HSC?

Discuss. We have to hand in our forms tomorrow, and I need honest advice.

Thank you.

I honestly would go for it. It's a great opportunity, and it looks really good on your CV. :)

Um... at my school it's not up to you to try out fr it. It's basically by voting that the captain is chose and everyone is automatically up.

I hope I get prefect at least though...it will be a great opportunity.

And seriously, HSC is all about managing your time effectively. If you are person with a great time management idea in your head, you won't have a problem. My school captain last year was involved basically in all schools activities but he still pulled of 97.75 and two years back, vice captain got 99.35 despite a lot of involvement.

I won't try out for a leadership role in Year 12 only because i follow idea that:
"The best leaders are not the people who seek leadership but the best leaders are the people who have leadership thrust upon them" ~By me

And also i don't want to risk it interfering with my HSC :)

Thanks for all your advice guys :)

If I did become school captain, is there a higher probable chance that I'd get into Med with a decent UAI, and UMAT? Would it contribute a lot towards uni interviews for Med?

Thanks again.

Edit: To shaon0, I'm pretty sure I have that leadership thrust within me, and the academic ability as well ;). But I'm still a bit uncertain about it.. If it was teachers choice, I'd probably win, but it's both teachers and students lol.

Good luck with that. But never openly express your desire for the captain position. That will probably backfire. That creates a bad impression.

I'd do it just for the experience but yeah, another benefit is that it'll look heaps good on your CV and your application for Med - people with lots of extracurricular activities stand out.

By the way, it shouldn't really affect you that much. Depends on how you manage your time I guess.

Captain of "School" 2009 is pretty insane on your cv. Being captain would be difficult, not only because of commitements, but because you have certain (high) expectations when you reach that in all facets. If you work hard, it shouldn't affect your UAI too much, after all, people still play sport in yr 12.

If there's a free blazer involved with the deal, I say go for it!!

No Blazer, and I'd probably consider my options.

LOL, no free blazer at our school, but you get a new tie, badge, and your blazer gets changed a bit (ie. Prefect pocket, golden stitching etc).

I guess some gold stitching isn't too bad.

I would have to completely disagree with that!

Although some true leaders dont come forward; it is the people who do come forward who have the "leadership trust upon them"..

Im School Captain doing HSC this year, and man oh man its been fantastic.

As for the interuptions: Kept to a minimum...

I guess if your even considering a prefect position, that is good enough to go for it!

At my school, School Captains and Prefects don't do much expect for going to Lunches and representing the school every now and then. So go for it!

Prefects and Captains also get pro looking hats and blazers :D
