Student A
School rank: 40
Physics rank: 38/50

Student B
School rank: 180
Physics rank: 10/40

These ranks are AFTER TRIALS (final ranks before their physics HSC exam)
Which student would be in a better position for a higher physics HSC mark?

that's my point though. you can't be sure who would be in a better position in the hsc because there are so many external factors unaccounted for. you can't simply say, here's the rank of the school, and ask who will do better?

is the cohort of that particular year going to do relatively well in the final hsc exam? how many top guys are there? how many at the bottom end of the spectrum? are they merely mediocre or are they actually gonna get a shit mark?

that said, student b will probably do better.

For student A, everyone in the course (except for the bottom 5 ranks) are doing well and are relatively close to each other. The mark gap between 38th and 1st is about 18.

For student B, the bottom half of the course are doing quite poorly, whereas the top half are doing average. The mark gap between 10th and 1st is about 12.

I see it like this;

[1---------------25--------------------------50] StudentA's school
..............[1------------------------20----------40] StudentB's school

As you can see, when the ranks line up, even a near-bottom rank in the better school is equivalent to an average rank in the lower school.

Of course, this is a very rough estimate on lining up performance and ranks, but is this a logical way of looking at it?

Not really, IMO.

As Continium has already stated, there are too many external factors influencing the mark, making it impossible to determine which student is in a better position.

The biggest flaw I see in your system is that you cannot compare ranks from one school to another. As in, the better school may set harder exams making students work harder, thus you cannot "line up" the ranks of the two schools.

Screwed if he wants a band 6, yeah. What if he's aiming for a low band 5?

who cares.

think about the underdogs below the top 200 schools.
selective schools are overrated

"if you not get uai 99 and not go to uns w commerce you not my son anymore.
i spend so many money to get you into sydney boy high."

"your mother gave yum yum to principal to get you into good skoo.
i spent life saving to get you to that schoo."

Underdogs below the top 200 schools aren't entirely abundant.

I heard that racist Asian jokes are the epitome of coolness.

I go to a public selective school.

too bad for them

im not racist i just love/hate everybody equally.

id say something different if a different ethnicity dominated the population of a selective school.

neither do i suggest going to granville boys high, a deathwish of a school.
habib this, habib that every hour.
other than that there are other good non-selective schools out there.
