what about if you go to a selective school though?

how important are ranks then?

isn't it mainly about how well the group does as a whole?
It's a bit of both and it also depends on what your UAI/ATAR aim is.

For eg if you go to a school usually ranked 500th and you want 99+, you'd need pretty much 1st in everything or at the very least 2nd. However, at a school usually ranked 100th, for the same aim you might just need to be around top 5 in everything etc etc. Of course what rank you need will varying based on how strong your year group for that particular subject as well, but you get the drift :)

it doesnt matter what student a or b end up getting,
youll still fail regardless

edit: I'm about as threatening as having mould growing on your cheese and you see it, then remove it... the tiny bits you can't see and do barely any damage, is me.
