Anyone do it? how does it compare to usyd. i mean advanced science not normal one.

UNSW Science is one of the best along with Usyd. These two probably have far better technologies than any other NSW universities.

I mean we're already doing gel electrophoresis in second year, which our demonstrator ensured us not many universities in Australia allow undergrad 2nd year to do such advanced techniques so early in undergraduate years.

What is gel electrophoresis?

It's an important technique primarily used to separate DNA or RNA dependent on their sizes and shapes. It is readily used in Molecular Biology, for both DNA/RNA sequencing and nucleic acids separation.

Survivor is it competitive? Like how hard is it to get ds and hd's? Can u do honours in normal science?

Of course you can do honours in normal science.

The difference between Adv Sci and Sci is that for Adv Sci, you HAVE to do advanced units and honours. With Science, you can do them if you want to.

It's not really based on rankings, you're more working for yourself than for a rank. D and HDs are achievable if you work hard and consistently. However, if you're a bit lazy and you don't like the pressure of the HSC you might find it hard. A semester at uni is like one year 12 year. You do around 4 subjects with the exams (for science anyway) worth 50%+. If you don't do well under pressure or in exams, then you'll have to work really hard for D and HDs.

Thanks babydoll_. How do you find science at unsw? Are the marks distributed on a bell curve or is it like the hsc, standards referenced? And is science at uni like hsc sciences? (i.e. just memorising, hardly any conceptual work)

Generally marks are not distributed on a bell curve. You get what you get. I doubt there are much scaling of marks as well.

No UNSW science is not like HSC science. Uni science has more lab work. You spend half of the time doing lab work and half of the time in lectures/tutotrials.

As to memorising, depends on how subjects you do. For more genetics, molecular biology type of subjects, you need to how concepts by their principles. For subjects like anatomy and microbiology, you should get by with memorising most of the materials. But they do try to test you on questions that requires conceptual understandings.

maths scales if you take higher (the more advanced level) subjects. i think comp sci does too.

Hmm, but by taking advanced units, its a lot harder to gain HD's. Is that correct?

we did gel electrophoresis a couple of weeks ago in first year biomedical science at newcastle uni...so u r not that far ahead of everyone else

I did it last year in a first year course run by UOW , as an extra unit for Year 11. Cloned DNA

OK guys, I know this is a stupid question to ask. But I have looked at a few places on the web and can't find much info on B Science at UNSW.

And my question is :

Can you become a psychologist by doing B Science at UNSW?

if anyone know the answer or where I can find the answer, please let me know.

Yes, of course you can. Major in psychology and do an extra honours year. Note that the extra honours year is compuslroy for becoming a psychologist, though.

I would like to take ideas on chemistry at UNSW.. is it good and how is the work load???? i hear that generally that chemistry and physics are loads of work.. is this true??

UNSW chemistry is 6 contact hour per chemistry subject. You do 4 subjects a year. Pretty tough in terms of the subjects. But if you are interested in it, go for it!
