can u suggest a better alternative?

and whats wrong with the courts?
A better alternative.. put him to work. Gaol is hell, i know that... but apparently it can't be that bad since there are alot of recidivists. So put them.. and him to work. Make them do the most grotesque, unimaginable things possible... THAT is how you make them pay. Make them work in morgues, work at accident sites, amoungst the diseased and filth ridden, clean hospital bedpans, and stable manure. You name something worse, get them to do it! Find recycling in the trash heaps at the pits... whatever. But don't just lock 'em up and say 'rot!'.

Whats wrong with the courts... whats right with them?! My next door neighbour is in and out of gaol like a bloody butterfly. Oh he knocked off some old lady... or he got caught with X. And still the judges are lenient, and he goes in a for a few weeks.. then a month... then weekend detention... and it just repeats over and over again. At the moment he's supposedly in for 12mths for breaking wkend detention... problem is... he's not in there any more.. and it hasnt even been 6mths. Go figure. BUT YET! our almighty gaol system will put my cousin in gaol for driving without a lisence... he's a recidivist sure, 3rd time offender... problem is hes got a learning disability which the court didn't take note of until this appearance. So now... they've got him doing the rounds of doctors and they think he can get off with just community service... after doing a month inside. I mean drug dealers get less!

Bah... doesn't help that the courts don't seem to get much right. (Doesn't help that all u see published in the media is what they get wrong). *shrugs* Comes from being a westie i guess.. can't trust the courts.

yes in keeping with our utalitarian ethics, just killing him would be easier and cost-effective...but theres not only the point of feeding and accomodating Sef...strange as it might soud capital punishent is worse off in the long run because it also affects the prisoner's direct/extended family in economic/social terms and removes a functioning member of society from the possibilty of contributing in some way

OK, I believe we have already had this topic discussed well enough. But, here are my recent thoughts of the death sentence from the other Sef thread (this is only a joke):

Imagine this:

The death penalty is re-instated.
However, you decide if they die or not.
You ring up like ACA or something and place your "Yes" or "No" vote on the 1902 numbers, you can also SMS your choice in. It would be a great revenue raiser for the State and the people would get a say. One vote per phone, and its $1.20/call or more from a public or modile phone.

Now, thats taking reality TV to a whole new level!!!

Eargerly awaiting your abuse!!!

you must believe in an 'eye for an eye' and revenge...great personal qualities...

its a sad indictment on society that we feel the need to kill someone in order to feel better...to make us all feel safer
actually its what I call justice... not a eye for an eye...

Well, I think he didn't do it.
But then again, my point may be biased, since my brothers did know him and he was a good guy... but he could have changed in those few years after the time that brothers knew him. I don't know. I didn't think there was enough evidence to put him in jail... so I think the penalty is a tiny bit harsh....but I guess he did kill THREE people.. and they were his FAMILY.
let him die.
yeah im with you on that one, except for that last line.

i dunno, i dont think i could condemn any person to death.

Well, I guess that just shows your immaturity. Justice is not doing to another exactly what they have done to you, ie taking life for taking life. That, as has been pointed out, is revenge. The eye for an eye idea refers to two tribes of barbarians who would kill a member of the other tribe who took out the eye of one of their own. The idea in this extreme case is to not seek blood but equal retribution: take an eye if he takes an eye, take a tooth if he takes a tooth, but don't kill the mofo. Which does not then translate to saying, well you killed some people, so now we're going to kill you. The justice system is about protecting society and its peaceable members, not exterminating its criminals.

The death penalty: murdering someone because murder is bad. I don't understand that. How can murder (and yes, the death penality is in itself, murder) ever be a good thing? It's not "justice," because once they're dead, they're out of pain and at peace. Let them rot in prison the rest of their lives.

Ok, although I think the death penalty should be re-instated, I have a better idea.

We bring back deportation. Think about it for a second, we send all convicted murderers, rapists, any other sick faggot and all those on a life sentence to the desert. Its out of the way, no reporters so we can abuse human rights and we can lock them up in the blistering heat all day.

Opinions?

1. arguing for the death penalty...something which stopped in Australia 40 odd years ago...just shows your point of view...

2. Your view of 'faggots' also sends a chill down my spine...you are from another era...and indesparate need of some kind of liberal education...

3. How bout we send biggots and renecks to the desert...and other undesireables...
By "faggots" I mean arseholes, criminals who have commited terrible acts...like rape. Fuck your a dick head.

you know 'faggots' are not arseholes and you shouldnt use the word in such a derogatory way...

im presume you have more than 10 friends...imformally it is said that 1 in 10 people are gay...its likely that one of your friends is a screaming 'faggot' :)
Probably...but do you know what? I don't really care.

"Immaturity" pfft... more like my point of view and if it comes across immature to you, so be it..
I know what eye for an eye means.. and certainly if someone killed or hurt someone close to me , I wouldn't want the offender/murderer to live...,if they took someones life ..then imo the offender does not deserve to live and the moment she/he commits such a horrific crime their rights should be taken away from them..

I generally tend to agree with Asquithian but my place is pretty much centre...

About a unit to the Left and a unit to the Authoritarian...

Apparently I'm:
Economic Left/Right: -5.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.18

I didn't see who I was closest to.

i think Sef is a complete A-hole and deserves to be castrated for what he did to his family.
Despite being half filipino myself...i believe he is an evil person.....
From the looks of it.. his family doesnt look full filo anyway.. his mother looks more chinese than anything..
