But you are saying that people are celebrating senseless death. Why don't you ask the people celebrating: what exactly are they celebrating? The war? No. Furthermore, it's not like Anzac day is some giant party, either.
You still don't get the point! Listen! People die in war. War is not fun. When you celebrate on a day that is supposed to remember war and what it involves you marginalise the facts of war and instead glorify this anzac legend crap. That is the issue. It is an intrinsic celebration of war.

Stazi said:
When did I say you were like the rest of the lefties? I merely said that you're highly illogical.

The creation of what became known as an "Anzac legend" became an important part of the national identity in both countries.
Yes I'm all for this sort of stuff to be a part of our national identity:

Go Australia! Keel keel!

If you do not understand the significance of ANZAC Day, I seriously don't know what you are doing in this country.
Nice argument

But no, seriously, you're probably right. I don't really want to live in Australia but capitalism has meant that I don't have enough money to pack up and leave. :D

hahahha. no. people died in wars on many days. ANZAC day isn't only about war. It is about being Australian. It is about shaping an Australian identity. It is about being sad about deaths, but also celebrating the way of life that those sacrifices have given way to.

"Neb is one of those classic left-wingers"
oh didn't realise i said it. Either way, I just think you're illogical and lack the processing power to take a step back and to actually evaluate both sides.

Nice work on propaganda. Exactly what skinheads do: they show images such as these and then instigate fear and hate against a people.

Socialism also means that you wouldn't have enough money to pack up and leave. Where would you rather live?

I add this post to my problems with peoples approach to ANZAC Day. "IT'S BOUT BEING AUSTRALIAN!" Yeah maybe it isn't, and no it shouldn't be.

That's exactly what I've done though fag. Otherwise I'd be saying "ANZAC Day blows ban it ban it now ban all of it!" Instead, I've said I have no problems with the dawn services and such but have problems with select parts of the day. pwned. :D

Oh I'm sorry that I took an dishonest look at war. Here's a more accurate portrayal

Nono, communism means that I would have as much of an opportunity to move somewhere else as anyone does.

No. You're simply saying that it shouldn't be a celebration> everyone should cry.

No, that's what war is. But the point of those pictures is to shock and cast a fake image in people's minds that this is what ANZAC day is actually about: celebrating those images.

Communist states still have a lack of freedom of movement between borders. Also, how could you afford to move if you're only earning an average wage. So where would you move?

also, neb, why do you think hardly anyone (if anyone at all) backs you up in your arguments? Is it because you have intellectual superiority, or is it because you have faulty reasoning?

it doesn't seem 'real' (as it's Comedy) but it says "Current Affairs" and someone left a comment saying "It's a shock. I'm an accountant in public practice. I never thought that these things really do happen."

so I was wondering if there are actually Street Accountants?

LOL the guys are hot there!

Re: Semester 1 Chatter Thread

Hi everyone. I wanted to tell you that capitalism is much better than communism because under communism everyone was really super happy. Most people don't get any money under capitalism. Look at this, and they live in a capitalist country:

Plus although lots of communist rulers were dictators who murder millions of people, bush is a much bigger murder.

If there was communism there wouldn't be a world trade centre and there wouldn't be a 9/11, and then bush wouldnt kill all those innocent people. Here is my completely unbiased picture proving this:

P.s. I'm not selfish at all - I just want me to have a chance to earn as much money as my neighbour, who in turns earns as much money as everyone else. I have a drug dependant, alcoholic friend who lives in the house across the road, and at the moment he keeps being fired from work for sleeping on the job, but I think he should earn as much as me, too. Communism.

Re: Semester 1 Chatter Thread

The dawn service is at dawn so that you get all the crying and general depressing war stuff out of the way early.

The rest of the day is more like the wake after the funeral.

EDIT: At Stazi's question

Neither?

a) no-one cares
b) saying anything against ANZAC Day is taboo
c) BoS is has a disproportionate amount of right-ring members, especially in terms of uni students.

Stazi said:

And you've given me very little reason to think otherwise. You suggested that it shouldn't be like this because "negativity is bad mmkay", and because "IT'S A CELEBRATION OF AUSTRAYLIA!" Hey, celebrate Australia if you want, but not on ANZAC Day.

Stazi said:

Not once did I say that nor was that my intention. If you'd bothered to read (and I know it's hard but try!) you'd see that I said "blind celebration" in my original post. Go on, go ahead and actually look at what I wrote before you make a post!

People look to be purposefully blind/ignorant towards what actually goes on in a war. On one of the two days in the Australian calender that's dedicated towards remembrance, we celebrate and have a good time. Is it a stretch to think that maybe if Australia sat back and thought objectively about ANZAC Day then maybe they'd be a little more aware of the realities of what ANZAC Day is actually remembering? Is it a stretch to think if Australia was a little more thoughtgul about these things, then we might not have re-elected that Howard bloke after he took the country to war?

Ooh an appeal to tradition eh?

Stazi said:

If the average wage in Australia was an average of Australia's wages then I could definately afford to move.

It shaped our nation, it showed our countrymen dying protecting this fledgling country, protecting the freedoms you value so greatly.
could we clarify here that gallipoli had absolutely nothing to do with protecting Australia or defending freedom? it was a shocking, pointless waste of life caused by incompetent london bureaucrats throwing soldiers at turkey as part of an arcane european political dispute. they didn't die for a principle. in fact, it's a key part of anzac day that the whole thing was utterly senseless and should not have happened. the spirit that the anzacs had is something to celebrate, absolutely, and i love the idea that we have a holiday that dually remembers their deaths and celebrates their lives. but the celebration is about their spirit and bravery in the face of adversity, not about implying that their deaths were justified because they were in aid of something greater. they weren't justified. they should not have died and the idea that their deaths were in some way justifiable because they served as a defence of liberty does a disservice to the anzacs.

Not really. I think it's about 50/50. The more vocal ones are right wing, though/

And why shouldn't they. Because you say so? Isn't that trying to impose your own values onto others.

Yes, I did read it. You are using classical techniques suggesting otherwise, though.

People aren't blind. And do we celebrate all day? You'll see that even in communist countries you also celebrate the end of war, after remembering lives lost.

Ooh an appeal to tradition eh?
An appeal to communism = trade and labour protectionism

If the average wage in Australia was an average of Australia's wages then I could definately afford to move.
huh? you'll be earning more than the average wage in teaching.

Iuno. Cuba?
I hope you were joking. Move there and enjoy your lack of civil liberties and controlled press.

how? if wages are all equal, how is the reward proportionate to effort? Did you actually live under communist rule, dickhead? My grandparents and parents did. I think we can apply their experiences more accurately than your ideological view of communism.

because his life is so pathetic that he wishes to have a better one, but can't be bothered doing anything about it apart from whine and reminisce about the good ol' communist days which he didn't actually experience. It's funny how people who did not live in communist states are the ones who actually advocate communism most vocally
