So, given that the semester/year is almost over, I thought that I'd create an unstructured learning-centre-like feedback thread (fun for the whole family). So... scholastic pursuits at USyd, eh?

1. Uni isn't as cool as I thought it was
2. Its not that much harder than I thought it was
3. But it is a lot harder to do well
4. I took a lot of time to adjust, despite thinking I was going ok
5. I'm ambivalent about second year.

1. USyd really isn't that great, it's all hype.
2. USyd students are more up themselves than other Uni students.
3. I will never, ever go into Wentworth again.
4. My first year subject choices were horrid, and because I was a guinea pig and they didn't actually think about my degree, I'll be doing another year of first year subjects.
5. The B.AS would be good if there wasn't the compulsory subjects.
6. Second semester was a lot more boring than the first (where did all the people go??)
7. Second semester has shown me I need to turn up for more than compulsory tutes and labs, oops.
8. I'll actually attend uni next year.
9. If I could transfer out, I'd leave USyd; or at least the main campus. Guess I'll have to actually try next year so I can get the marks to leave.

1. maths and chemistry should die. now
2. You lower your expectations dramatically at uni. now, for once, i feel good when i get 60/100
3. it took at least 6 weeks before i realised i was actually at uni
4. its hard to make friends in a degree that is so broad
5. if it wasn't for madsoc, i would have gone insane
6. avoid the liberals and/or keep left and or socialist alternative and/or EU at all costs
7. semester 2 is crap, and went really fast
8. i feel like i've learned absolutely nothing at uni, and i worry that they're gonna turn me out into the world and i still wont feel competant
9. while there are some nice buildings, some are ugly as hell
10. timetables have no regards for the laws of nature. it is nigh on impossible to run from wallace to mereweather in 10 mins.

thoroughly enjoying the engineering side of my course
have learned heaps (and built an aircraft :))
law is fucking shit and unchallenging, it involves pure regurgitation and no independent thinking, basically the HSC all over again...i'll probably drop it
a lot of attention whorings students everywhere
alot of asians, manning feels like you're in asutralia, engineering feels like your in china
don't expect feedback for assignments cause tutors who don;t giv a shit mark them
don't try and learn the entire maths course in stuvac
Bar a few, my law class is exceptionally gay and nauseating, if those people are going to be the next generation of lawyers out legal system is going to die

HAPPY HOLIDAYS ALL

p.s. try wallace to the aeronautical building in 5 :)

Uni is shit. This is evidenced by the fact that it drives people to throw sentence structure out the window and use numbered points instead. The social side of it is great, but don't ever overload a subject you don't have to do just because it seems fun, because it won't be.

I'd like to reiterate something said above, namely that I've found it's not hard to do alright, but very hard to do very well.

Also I've found:
1. Teamwork is stupid and rarely ever works
2. Too many assignments for nothing in commerce
3. You can get screwed over in a course because of the way a certain person marks
4. USyd's a pretty vibrant place, moreso than I was expecting (in general)
5. Some aspects of commerce want you to disregard your own good writing style in favour of an infinitely rigid structure simply for ease of marking

1. Uni is awesome

2. Semester one was hard to adjust to. I spent the whole semester getting use to uni. Spent a lot of time in tears. Also laughed a lot!

3. I'm glad that I didn't go to uni with my friends from school. I got thrown in to the deep end where I knew 2 people max, and I have made such awesome friends

4. People are really free and open lol which can be a good and bad thing

5. People come from all walks of life and I've had some of the best conversations

6. Manning is great - coffee absolutely rocks. LOVE hanging out there

7. There are so many bloody hot guys EVERYWHERE. I gotta learn how to control my hormones. It's such a big difference to being at an all girls' school

8. Semester two was bloody awesome. I got use to my subjects and my degree. And i feel settled.

9. I'm extremely happy when i get Passes. I've realised that uni marks are so
bloody political. But I can get a degree with a Pass mark! That's all that matters.

10. I agree with Sportsgal - the girls are always competing with each other. It's such a bloody fashion contest.

  • Shit lecturers generally equal shit marks
  • Skipping lectures aslong as you learn the stuff can be better then going to the lectures themselves
  • Need to find a society and stick to it, gotta love SUTEKH
  • Realised I care more about my marks here then I did the HSC.
  • Redbull is sleep in a can
  • The density of chocolate in a cake slice has ruined chocolate cake for me
  • I'm 85% sure this is the opposite of what gen wanted, but oh well I was just following a trend

My bad. I replied to the thread late at night in point form, and I guess everyone followed on in the same fashion.

If someone is individualistic enough to reply in prose, please do so.

Will do, Ms Moderator!

I'll address the thread in full myself in a week or two... My year is entirely depedent upon the result, but till then I have a few comments that will suffice.

I'm annoyed at the fact that the Australian only offered it's 'year for so much' special for only a few days, whereas the Herald offered it for some time. I'm not exactly a fan of the Murdoch Press (and I now listen to the ABC more so than read the papers), but the Herald is mostly online and in anycase its journalists are forever whinging about something, so I would hve liked to have had the option of picking up a copy of the Australian in addition to the Herald. I do know that the papers are relatively cheap as it is, but an outlay of 60c most days does add up over time.

The union's food is shocking, and that's being polite. The price structure in particular makes one want to scream. It turns out that the alcohol is reasonably priced with the member discount, but that isn't much use for someone who only ever visits Manning for a drink or two at the end of each year and it hardly helps the USU cause in that it gives those arguing against it something to criticise (ignoring those aspects of the Union or the SRC that are of significant value, of course)... Sorry, couldn't help myself :).

I hate the fact that too many men are becoming involved in the Manning-based fashion contest. Yes, there's a need to be respectable and clean, but for fu.. fig's sake, there's no need to spend however much on clothing and gel just to impress those of a similar bent. If all men stick together, then there's a hope that we may just beat this apparent shift in social values - don't give in, you bastards. Be clean and repsectable but don't do it in a manner that suggests that you are nothing more than a walking advertisement for the wankey crowd that inhabits Manning. Surely that woman cannot be worth your wallet.

1. Uni is a lonely place in Semester 1 when you're one of the few from your school that isn't doing a Science(ish) degree.

2. USyd is full of wankers who think that because they're in uni their opinion is suddenly very important.

3. SRC, Union Board, etc. elections are a chance for people to spout crap that isn't even relevant to uni life. If you want to talk about women's rights in the workplace, run for local, state or federal parliament. Thank you.

4. No matter how many times you say "I'll start my assignments on the day I get them," it won't happen.

5. Only about 10% of the people at uni have anything resembling an interesting personality.

6. Postgrad tutors can be serious power freaks who will mark you down severely on an essay because of things like long sentences. Cross your fingers and hope you get the Unit Coordinator as your tutor.

7. Make sure you get all your assignments back before the exams. That way you know how hard to study.

8. Everywhere you go, you see a whole bunch of girls who look exactly the same. Blonde hair tied back, ugly sunnies, short shorts/skirts. Ugly clones.

9. I don't want your fliers. Don't give them to me.

10. A pass is good enough for a degree. I've had to swallow some pride and come to be proud of anything over 70.

11. Second semester is boring as batshit work-wise. But socially it picks up.

12. Will be going to Theatresports as much as possible next year.

13. I didn't realise there was a Handball Society. I'm very disappointed in myself.

I think I shall try
To share my thoughts on uni
With a short (!) haiku.

It ain't been that bad.
But then, twelve contact hours
Are really F.A.

I hate no subject -
German, French and music are
Relatively nice.

But French has been a
Little boring, but alas,
Pour moi, c'est la vie.

Friendship-wise it's hard:
Only small acquaintances,
Never life-long pals.

Long waits 'tween classes
Suck. Time down the dunny-can
It is sometimes, but,

Hark, there beeth hope!
Pils'ner-Urquell at Hermann's,
Although for four bucks,

Is the ultimate
Pre-MUSC tute or lecture drink
To get brain thinking.

Ah well, like I said
It's not too bad. But with one
Year down, 6* to go :(.

*That is, the four-year
Undergrad degree, honours,
Then B or M Teach.

...

1. Uni took a while to adjust to, particularly with 8am starts.
2. A lot of North Shore guys have curly blonde hair and wear pink shirts.
3. Wentworth is crap. It is too dark, boring and full of science students. :p
4. Manning is cool, but I got sick of it.
5. There is a shopping centre in Broadway. :D
6. It is much harder to go well in uni.
7. 90% of Pharmacy students are Asian.
8. There is a cleaner in the chemistry building who looks like a woman. My friends and I had a bet on whether its a man or a woman. I won.
9. The walking distance between buildings is tiring.
10. I'm looking forward to 2nd year, after finally adjusting in 2nd semester.

It's for all of the forum's USyders to talk about their year at uni, xiao.
