If anyone has good quotes on tragedy and conventions from Aristotle or Seneca I'd love to have them.

Also anyone interested in giving some critique on a Hamlet essay, please let me know. I have two pre-circulated questions for my mid-course, only one of which will be the final question.

Thanks

Get yourself a copy of Aristotles 'Poetics'. It's only about $10 and is the basis of defining Tragedy.

Here are some quotes from it as well. However, keep in mind, when I used these, it was for a university drama (and not an English) essay:

‘the effect of tragedy is not dependent on performance and actors’ p13

‘Tragedy is not an imitation of persons, but of action and life’ p11

‘the events… [are] the most important thing of all’ p11

Tragedy could exist without character, though not without plot (NOT A QUOTE THOUGH) p12

t is possible for the evocation of pity and fear to result from the spectacle… [though it] is less artistic, and dependent on the production p22

natural diction to ‘establish importance or unimportance’ p31
