i applied for misadventure and got it and didnt go to the exam. i chekced my result and it said i failed. should i go and check it out or is that normal for the exam not to count yet?

Data Mining is a dodgy subject. Not because the content is bad - it could be a really good course, but the lecturer has been kindof busy at PwC for quite a while (hence our assignment came out three weeks late, and ended up being due on the Friday of Stuvac...), so doesn't seem to have the time to teach it properly. (We haven't ever gotten our assignments back - she e-mailed us our marks with a couple of commments).

The content is mostly theoretical stuff to help you get a feel for data mining, and it does that quite well, but you don't go into a lot of depth with the software you're meant to be using (and which all the assessment is based around - the exam is a practical exam in the computer labs), so you have to put in a bit of work yourselves crunching through it. When you get 2 and 3 MB files everytime you export the output from a session, you rapidly discover that your disk quota is gone. (In the end they had to remove quotas on 20 of the computers downstairs in the RC-labs because it was the only way we could work on them).

Marks so far seem okay - people were getting 20 out of 25 for the assignment despite ignoring the marking guidelines, and those who looked at them seemed to be getting nearly full marks. I'm told last year (the first year the course was run) most marks were credits or distinctions, with a few marks outside that.

Would I recommend you do it? Depends on whether you're really interested in that sort of thing, but unless you're REALLY keen on it, I wouldn't. It looks good on the transcript (assuming I get a decent mark, anyway!) but it's not really worth the hassle. As a comparison, doing a subject with Sachi (ask the second year actuarial students on this board) was fun. Even the quizzes and the exam were fun

I think its normal. I have a friend sitting supps because he was overseas and his results show 3 FLs.
