Could you just clarify for us (maybe just me?) what's happening with SAM?

The email above implies that SAM will be closing down -- is this only with relation to the already-forecasted SAM-MUSC-MUSA blending, or is it serious?
From what I read:

a) Uni was going to liquidate it anyway, BUT
b) V Ma tried to dodgy before it could 'close up'
c) Court injunction stopped anything from happening, liquidating AND transfer of funds
d) Now that everythings been settled, a is back in process

Haha, I do that so much... Once I posted a massive post in the wrong unit discussion forum on WebCT. :(

Oh cool. Just freaked me out for a second... I really dislike it when public notices aren't to-the-point:

'Our plan for liquidating SAM and merging it with MUSC-MUSA is still going ahead' would have been nice! ;P

Macquarie students ordered to return missing equipment

Harriet Alexander Higher Education Reporter
May 26, 2007

MACQUARIE University students have been ordered to return $70,000 worth of equipment after being filmed removing it from their offices shortly before their representative council was liquidated.

The besieged student president, Victor Ma, and other former councillors, moved furniture, computers, books and records from the Macquarie University Students' Council offices before the Supreme Court ordered the organisation be wound up last week.

The liquidator, Trevor Pogroske, said he arrived at the offices on the afternoon he was appointed by the court to discover them bare.

"Clearly, assets had been removed," Mr Pogroske said.

Later, the university discovered from closed-circuit television footage that Mr Ma and the former councillors had cleared the office 11 days earlier, Mr Pogroske said.

Mr Ma denied yesterday the students had stolen the equipment. They had put them into storage to protect student assets in the case of a university takeover, he said.

"The liquidator was quite angry," Mr Ma said.

"He said things were illegally removed. I said, 'Wait, wait, wait. Please refrain from such accusations. Things were removed before you were appointed as a liquidator, therefore it was legal at the time.' "

The university said it had begun legal proceedings to retrieve the equipment, but Mr Ma said the councillors returned it last night.

Eastwood police said it was a university matter.

Earlier this week the Federal Court ordered that the university's union, Students at Macquarie, be wound up, after its directors returned more than $200,000 they had moved out of the organisation's accounts.

Mr Ma, who was also the union president before being sacked last month, said he and the other directors had moved the money to pay for a legal fight against the university's planned takeover of the student organisations.

But as both student organisations are in liquidation, the way is clear for the university to create a new company to run student activities, catering, sports and shops on campus.

The new structure means the end of student politics at Macquarie University.

The company will be managed by the university, and the students sitting on the board will be appointed by the university.

A spokeswoman for the university said the board may hold student elections at a later date.

I knew Di's tenure at MAQ would end in a blaze of glory.

And by glory I mean her falling flat on her face.

I'm not 100% sure I understand it, but it's not sounding so good. Will a student union still exist? If we have a "company", how uni-run will it be?

Oh V Ma... could you have screwed things up any worse?

Hunny, SAM, MUSC, and MUSA were merging anyway.

The union will exist as part of the new entity.

Hopefully it's entirely uni-run - MQ students are obviously incapable of running something... Voting in Victor as MUSC councillor after he was dragged through the dog-pile was the best winrar evar. [/sped]

But, according to the article which Ben posted, there will be student reps. Ironically, the uni students don't actually want to be represented (think Malaysia, only no floods...), so there'll probably be a default win like Academic Senate and (now) MUSC.

I do like the sound of this, though:

and the students sitting on the board will be appointed by the university.
I wonder if it means that the uni will just figuratively 'appoint' reps (like the Prime Minister is appointed after he's elected in as Minister for X), or if it literally means that the uni will chose and appoint students from scratch.

But 'merging' and 'company' sound completely different :/ (or maybe it's just my bad for reading the herald?)

My fear of "uni-appointed reps' is that if the wrong person is in change of appointing, things will go downhill again?

Yeah, my day was:

(Yesterday) Got home from class at 9:30pm,
(Yesterday-today) 10pm-4am: Studied,
4am-7am: Slept,
8am-9am: Went for walk,
10am-4pm: Studied,
4pm-5pm: Porn,
5pm-now: Class.

All blank spots = eating and watching Stargate episodes.

Sorry. :(

I'll try for next time, though. Could you give us a summary of what happened?

i won't do this again because you could have used your porn time for meeting time. got to get your priorities straight buddy

basically:

  • tim gave a talk about academic senate
    • next meeting is 12th June, starts at 9:30.
    • anyone can go
  • i gave a spiel about university council
    • next meeting is 29th June, starts at 2pm
    • anyone can go
    • in the UN room at the crystal palace (aka e11a)
  • phil gave an update on sam/musc etc
    • liquidation etc
    • auditors etc
    • nothing new really
    • phil is macq's captain jack sparrow
  • Question time
    • point raised about independent media source needed (ahem incredible holt)
    • point raised about precedence set by MUSR in the last six months when they shut down any student representation and many clubs
    • point raised about the new student council should have power to email all students
    • point raised that new student council should have indepedence from university so that it can criticise and make suggestions
    • many more points raised
    • you should have been there man
  • next meeting 12pm, 7th june, same place
most exciting part of the meeting was that the security guards could have come and busted us at any time.

Just a correction for above. MUSR didnt shut the sports clubs down, the university dissolved the sports council that oversaw the clubs and effectively shit down the clubs, not MUSR itself. The university appointed reps voted to do this.

hey peeps

did you get the email about U@MQ? what do you reckon?

apparently the email got sent by paul bowler at 3:26 pm. Kegs and me were in a meeting with him from 3 till 3:40 and he didn't go near the computer. he was doing some dVC magic i guess.

that is the most information i have seen in an email from dVC. pretty cool. he didn't explicitly say we'd get an SRC, but it looks likely.

peace
